Cuban outfield prospect Dariel Alvarez has agreed in principle to a deal with the Orioles worth $800,000, he told MLB.com on Thursday.

Alvarez, who is waiting on the results of his physical, could officially sign on Saturday. He met with Orioles officials earlier this week at the club's Spring Training complex in Sarasota, Fla.

"I'm obviously very happy to get my career going," Alvarez, 24, said from Miami. "Now, it's time to get to work."

Alvarez, a right-handed hitter who played for Camaguey in Serie Nacional in Cuba, defected from the island last summer and later played professionally in Vera Cruz, Mexico....

Damn you for beating me to this Greg.

Quick note on Dariel Alvarez:

Alvarez, a right-handed hitter who played for Camaguey in Serie Nacional, defected from Cuba last summer and has been playing professionally in Vera Cruz, Mexico, since October. The 6-foot-2, 190 pound Alvarez can play all three outfield positions and has impressed Major League scouts with his above-average arm during league-play in Mexico.

Amazin Avenue had a good scouting report on him (with video)

One thing is that he falls outside the normal CBA and cap since he has 3 years pro experience and is 23. I imagine with that free market bidding his price went up.

Alvarez hit .354/.371/.521 in 152 bats in La Liga Invernal Veracruz of Mexico in 2012 during his age-24 season. In his last season in Cuba, Alvarez set career highs with a .363/.404/.613 line and 20 home runs in 344 at-bats in 2011 (full Serie Nacional de Béisbol stats here).

Alvarez is said to possess an above-average arm, making him a potential fit in right field or center field for interested teams.

Eduardo Encina from The Sun with more... http://www.baltimore...story?track=rss

The Orioles have agreed to terms with Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez, according to an industry source.

The Orioles scouted Alvarez in Fort Lauderdale last month, as did four other clubs. He will report to the club’s spring training facility for a physical and then officially sign a deal as early as this weekend. Because the deal isn’t finalized, the source couldn’t disclose the signing bonus.

The 24-year-old Alvarez defected from Cuba last summer, played in Mexico and was declared a free agent in January and is now living in Florida.

The Orioles consider Alvarez a five-tool player who can play all three outfield positions and can quickly move up the team’s minor league system, much like Cuban defector Henry Urrutia, who will likely join the major league club on Friday after just 67 minor league games...

Nice to see them add position prospects from areas where they avoided.

Looks like a real good athlete.

Just too bad they wait until after Sano, Cespedes, and Puig to start jumping into these.

Even still, it's not like any of our IFA's have approached the stratosphere of the dollars of the one's you mentioned though.

And they've turned out to be worth every penny. Won't spend money on domestic free agents, wouldn't spend money on IFA's. At some point you have to acquire some game changing talent, and you could have had all 3 of them on fairly team friendly deals if you would just take the risk. Frustrating to watch them whine about the cost and risk, when they should have spent some real scouting money and known what these other teams knew.

It's a little early to proclaim them to be worth every penny, but I would agree that out looks promising.
