A 38 pitch, 3-run inning... very tight strike zone, and a botched call on the Trump steal of 2nd base. It all adds up to a tumultuous start from Hammel who just doesn't have the sink on his 2-seamer this year.

Wow, I thought it was a bad hop at first, but not really... just flat out misplayed it. Nice break there.

If Hammel ends up somewhere between where he was last year, and where he is now, do you still look to extend him? With those results, he'd probably come at a very reasonable price.

I'd probably let him hit the market and see if we can find a better starter available in either FA or trade.  But if not, I'd take him back if he ends up being the best available option.  A big unknown at this point is how Bundy and Gausman will be looking by the end of the year.  We may not even really need to sign a FA starter if both are looking like they'll be in the 2014 rotation.

Come on.  Crappy lefties are one thing.  Crappy righties are not allowed to shut you down.

In 3 career starts vs. the O's, Jerome Williams is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA. He's pitched 21.0 IP, 16 k's, 0 BB's, 19 H's.

Yeah, they play a factor... though I'm done assuming pitching prospects are going to claim spots in the rotations for years to come. Even guys as talented as Bundy and Gausman, who are both more talented than any of the pitching prospects we've had over the last decade (IMO).

It looks like the O's dodged a bit of a bullet by not extending him this off-season, when his price would have likely been somewhat inflated.

I feel like those type of stats are meaningful for guys within a division who you see very frequently, but they don't really mean much if each of those starts were years apart and the teams were completely different.

I agree... yet it seems we have a few guys sprinkled around the league who seem to do well against us, even if it's once a year. Still, not very meaningful, I agree, but I just figured I'd throw it out there.

Glad Hamilton missed that one.  Good bounce back by Hammel.

Yep, and ANOTHER 10-pitch inning and he'd be up to about 60 in 3 innings...not too horrible.

Oh OK... umpire delay of some sort... may have to go to a 3-man umpiring crew as the HP ump took a ball off the mask and went into the clubhouse.
