yes, that is the HOF's grandson

At what point should it become customary for a team to get a "hometown pick?" I don't think anyone thinks a first day pick and in many cases a second day pick should be left where that player has a legacy. I remember last year when the O's picked Ryan Ripken, Adam Kilgore (Nats beat writer for the Post) tweeted about how it be a great troll job if the Nats had picked him up right before. This is one of those unwritten rules discussions. My feelings are if you pick a guy in the 35th round when you know that their "legacy" team will likely pick them later on, it's not right. But these kind of picks should be just that, left for the end of the draft.

While I usually do agree with that sentiment, it seems that Mike is actually a legitimate prospect (in terms of where he was drafted). I don't blame the O's for snagging a guy that they legitimately think is worth it there.

To clarify, I'm asking at what point could the Red Sox have beef with that pick? If the O's had made it in the 35th round, I would think it be more in bad taste but where they did I don't think it is as much. Is there an unwritten protocol call on this?

I would probably say that it may be in bad taste in the later rounds, but I don't think there is any unwritten protocol. You just don't see it usually. I can't recall anyone doing that in the later rounds before.

Jon, good write-up as usual.

I know it's not over, but for all intents and purposes I feel that enough picks are in the books to discern an opinion... and (as usual) I came away very disappointed in the O's draft.

Drafting 4th or 5th will typically bring in a dynamic talent, and that has essentially been true, but the O's record past the 1st Round has been mostly miss. EVERY year we pass over higher rated talent (at least in the eyes of an industry composite) and are left with a system annually mediocre in talent. Olson, Beato, Avery, Givens, Klein, Esposito, and Kline round out our most recent 2nd rounders, and that's --in my view-- a lackluster bunch. I could go on, but my own record of who I would've taken (if in charge) is better than the O's over the past 9 seasons (since I began keeping record). That's pretty sad. Maybe the O's have had a run of bad luck, or maybe it's something else. Either way, Gary Rajsich deserves a chance to let his record speak for itself... and I hope his choices work out better than his predecessors.

Again, I enjoy reading you here Jon.

And this post highlights why we have been a top heavy organization for the last several years.

Most of the guys mentioned were ranked pretty high in BA's listing.  There were some clear issues with each of them, but that tends to be true for many at that point.

Here's another:

Chance Sisco® @chance_sis12

If anyone has other feel free to add them. To me, this is one of the cooler things -- seeing guys live out their dreams. The odds of a 35th rounder getting to the majors are pretty difficult let alone as a star, but it kind of feels like anything is possible at this point.

The draft tracker has been updated with as many of the bonuses as we could track down.  We'll continue to update this as more of the bonus information trickles out.

I wrote about two college draftees for the Orioles this year in Stephen Tarpley and Drew Dosch. http://baltimorespor...pley-and-dosch/ Tarpley is an interesting talent -- any lefty that can get the fastball up to 95 is indeed interesting. I also looked into the makeup concerns that were rumored to be behind his exit from USC after his freshman year, but it didn't sound like a long-term issue. Dosch has a good bat, but his coach didn't seem terribly confident about his ability to stick at third long-term.

Orioles signed Dan Ayers, 25th rd selection.

This is a big pickup for the Orioles, and they signed him for 200K

He has three potential above average pitches, Fastball Curveball Change.

Well I said it that night that I'd be really surprised if TOR managed to sign Bickford, and now it's official that they didn't. Starting to see a trend with them.
