Way better than McCann at blocking, caught stealing, framing according to Savant. I imagine he'll be looking for a starting job, but maybe the idea of catching here with Adley DH'ing a decent bit is more appealing.

I agree Elias plays everything close to the vest so take the following for what its worth to you. Ive seen reports from national sources that the Os are interested in Fried, Manaea, Tyler ONeill, and Teoscar Hernandez.

I'd take any or all of those guys.

Anyone interested in Travis d'Arnaud as backup catcher?  Braves turned down an $8M option on him, but he'll probably get close to that.  He might be able to find more regular work, he started about half the games for the Braves last year with a 103 OPS+.

d'Arnaud to the Angels, 2/$12.

Would've easily beat that. Maybe he wanted a full opportunity to start.

Santander vs Hernandez?  Who is your preference?

MLBTR ranked Santander 9th among FAs and predicted 4/$80M.  They ranked Hernandez 11th and predicted 3/$60M.  Fangraphs ranked Santander 12th and predicted 5/$100M and ranked Hernandez 11th and predicted 3/$72M.

Santander is 30 next year, Hernandez is 32.  Santander has OPS+ of 134, 121,120, 94 and 135 with 134 total home runs going back to the Covid year.  Hernandez has 137, 108, 128, 131, and 146 with 132 total home runs over the same 5 years.  Both have been very durable.  Savant says Hernandez is much faster, but if anything Santander has more outfield range.  Both have strong arms.

Satnander. Its fairly close but I'll take the younger switch hitter who doesnt have to hit into the Wall vs RHP 81 games a year.

Santander for one reason. He's already been an O and the players and fans like him. Stick with the guy you know IF you can only have one of them.

Im a little surprised that there are still openings on the ML staff. But maybe thats not uncommon at this point. Still need a bench coach and field coach. Maybe another hitting coach as well though my guess is they wont have co hitting coaches anymore.

BTW Holt signed on as Boston's bullpen coach today.

I wont be surprised if one of the lefty BP guys is moved in a trade. In particular, I can see Akin garnering interest

It looks like Fredi was hired in December 2019, so maybe it's normal. I don't think these types of hires affect offseason strategy at all so it shouldn't matter, other than doing it early enough to get who you want before they find other jobs.

Rosenthal did say a week or so ago the Os were interested in bringing in David Ross as the bench coach. Apparently NY tried to get him last year but he was looking to manage. Maybe they are working on getting him onboard this year.

Gil wins ROY, so no extra draft pick for the O's.

Luckily Gil didn’t qualify to net one for the Yankees. But Cowser was robbed, worth ~1.5 more WAR than Gil.

Gil has been a member of the Yankees since 2021. His first start was on 8/3/21. Over three years later he takes home the ROY award.

I mean, Cowser was better anyway for reasons you mentioned (Gil's FIP was 4.14), but has there ever been a ROY winner who started their career earlier than Gil, yet still retained rookie status?

Fangraphs had Cowser at 4.0 WAR and Gil at 2.2. Basically that's Cowser finishing 47th in MLB and Gil at 184th.

184th is like day 19 of a draft. Cowser finishing 47th is well, 2nd day? I'm salty. Whatever.

Saw this elsewhere...Lou Piniella, 5 years. Debuted with 1 PA for the O's in '64, cup of coffee with Cleveland in '68, won ROY with Royals in '69.

Gil was a fairly strong fav to win it by the end of the year. Not sure why anyone is surprised.
