Sounds like it's just speculation at this point, but Rosenthal published an article in The Athletic saying a source thought the impetus for the sale is that John didn't get what he hoped for out of the new lease, and sounds like the family might need a short term infusion of cash....while also completing the bulk of the sale after Peter dies, thus taking less of a tax hit on most of the proceeds.

I had heard that the new lease was contingent on new ownership.
From what I've read, the lease is written so if the Orioles are sold, the new ownership has to abide by the terms of the agreement. I'm sure the MSA very much wanted that language in the contract.

Steve Cohen (NYM) is worth $20 billion - for example.
Obviously team spending has more to do with want than how.

Probably too late this season, but it will be nice if the new ownership attempts to compete.

How does this combination compare to other teams in terms of spending power?

Rubenstein is worth $4 billion, the other guy close to $2 billion.

I've been so decimated by the Ravens that I didn't see this until just now.

Quite literally, this might be the only thing that can make me feel better. Baseball has always been my first love sports-wise, and I have literally been hoping for this since before I could drive. It is a great day.

Years ago, when I think I was 19 or 20, I was so disgusted by ownership that I helped to organize a donation drive amongst the posters on the old Baltimore Sun board to put a billboard outside of Camden Yards asking ownership to sell. We actually got enough money from disenfranchised fans to do it. People were willing to send money to a complete stranger in a time that wasn't common to make their feelings known. It was pretty crazy.

I still think about that, from time to time. I remember how we labored over the correct phrasing to use.

I guess John and fam need real money right now. I hope MASN stays with the new owners!
This made the Ravens loss forgotten, all is well!
Dunno if it's true but I just heard on TV that the brothers couldn't agree, each one dug in his heels, and this is the result.
No mention of which brother wanted what... although I think I remember something about the younger brother suing John for being a crook... dunno if this might be related to that...

I remember that. It was a big ordeal, but I was happy with the final result. It was cathartic in a way.

Definitely has to do with "want".
Some time ago I looked at market size and owner net worth. The Padres owner had the lowest net worth, under $1B, and market size was something like 28th out of 30. They had no problem opening the wallet.
Anytime someone, especially the Angelos' bring up "small market", you might as well ignore the rest of what they have to say. For years the O's are receiving more from revenue sharing than they are actually spending on the roster. It shouldn't be allowed.
