Honestly, who the hell gives a damn how old the team is? What's the point? The core we'll be counting on to get us to the promised land is very young. You always augment with some vets. This isn't a contest over who has the youngest team. So much focus on something that is frankly irrelevant IMO.
Agreed, the core is young and there is a lot of younger talent on the way. The future is bright for this team. Maybe the Ranger series serves as an experience that makes the team tougher and better suited for the playoffs next year. 2023 was an excellent year, and once the sting of the last week wears off, more fans will realize just how good it was.

A few interesting things in here.

The one that caught my eye, was Hyde's comments about only having short relievers for the playoffs after Means went down.
My question, is why was Baker on the roster instead of Irvin?

Heavy PEDs
I think the crackdown on speed was a lot bigger than it's given credit for. Especially witih the travel schedule that players go through during the season. You don't need big muscles to recognize a fastball from a changeup, but you need to stay alert and have good reaction time, and amphetamines reduces your reaction time. That extra 5-10 ms is probably a difference maker.

Im shocked Hyde wasnt good at recruiting FAs here.
Free agents would play for a grapefruit in a baseball cap if you paid them what they were worth.

Three potential Super-2s:
Wells finished at 2 years 132 days. McKenna 123 days. Kremer 112 days.
Last year's cutoff was 128 days. 116 in 2022. Range of 115 to 146 over the past 15 or so years.

Mateo, Tate and Akin feel like easy non-tender choices. Suppose could keep Mateo in a bench role but I can't see anyone signing him for as much as the $2.5-3M he'd get through arbitration. McKenna probably won't make enough if he qualifies as a Super-2 to worry about non-tendering.

Tate I think depends on his health but agree on Akin and Mateo.

Here are the MLB trade rumors projected arb salaries. I don't know how accurate they are but they've been doing this for a while so I assume they know what they're doing.

Total is about $65M before any non-tenders. Lots of room for additions even if we limit it to an Angelosianly embarrassing total of about $90M.

It will def be under 100 mil. Lock that in. Somewhere between 80-90 feels right.
Feels accurate, perhaps. Doesn't feel right.

I've been conditioned to have rock bottom expectations so I won't complain if they get to $90M. Unless its just all 1-year deals...if they sign a Gibson type for $12M, two good middle relivers (but not closers) for $5-8M each and one bench player for $5M, I don't think I'll be too happy with that.

Signing a Gibson type would be a failure to address SP. No way should anyone accept that garbage. We need to add a SP we expect to be good, not someone we hope is ok. Trade or FA, that's fine, but its a must.
