After his great debut start, Flaherty has left a lot to be desired. If he's going to be counted on in the post season, he needs to start putting together quality starts and today would be a fine time to start, Lucille.

He's made 5 starts.
1 quality.
1 horrible.
2 usable.
1 below average.
That's what he is.

He's got a 6.66 ERA here, I think that has a lot more meaning than how closely he kept us in the game on his 5 starts. If this is who he is, then he won't be in the majors next year. Fortunately, this isn't who he is. He's not particularly good, but he's not a 6+ guy either. On the other hand, I've got very little confidence in him for the postseason. He's made 5 starts.

The era is inflated, but that's more about sample size vs. telling you anything significant.
He's got a quality arm, that made a bunch of starts at age 22 and 23... and then over '20 - '22, had 154 combined ML innings.
He's had 134 innings entering today. He's got a 4.84 era, and a 4.88 xERA for the year.
So, right now he's a back of the rotation arm.
He's got quality stuff that isn't consistent enough for his overall results to be better.
He's made 25 (now 26 starts on the year).
I think the 5 Orioles (now 6) starts are good guess of what you can expect.

He's been horrific since coming here. Not passable. Horrible. If that's what you expect the rest of the way, that's reasonable I think, but it seems like you're saying you expect him to be decent and are using his performance here to explain that. Which is contradictory, because his performance has not been decent. There is no argument to make that it has been.

I think what he’s suggesting is that over a small sample size like this, the difference in ERA is sort of negligible. Which I’d agree with I suppose, for the most part. Although in a pennant chase, I’d say every run matters. Conclusion is confusing to me. Do you expect him to be a 6+ ERA guy like he's been here? Or a sub-5 like he's been elsewhere? Sometimes well below 5.

I think he's a 4th or 5th starter, with quality stuff that's inconsistent.
Stuff is good enough that every now and then he'll lock in and look good. (8/3 start at Toronto)
He's also capable of looking horrible. (8/15 start at San Diego)
Most of the time he'll look like a 4th or 5th starter. (8/9 vs. Houston, 8/27 vs. Colorado, 9/3 at Arizona).
He's made 5 starts entering today... 1 good, 1 horrible, 2 passable, 1 below average.

LOL at the in-game, team analysis of an O's team from three years ago.
Never change, MASN.

See you added this edit, so I'll respond to this as well.
Again, I expect him to be a 4th or 5th starter as he has been all year.
A 4th or 5th starter with quality stuff, that has now thrown close to as many ML innings in '23 as he had the last 3 years combined.
His stuff is good enough that he'll occasionally look really good. It can happen now and again, but an outlier.
He's inconsistent enough that he'll occasionally look horrible. Can happen now and again, but an outlier.
If you are looking at him in the context of what he is a - a 4th or 5th starter - what is the argument that his 8/9 outing vs. Houston, or his 8/27 vs. Colorado weren't reasonable?
What else would you possibly be expecting from a back of the rotation starter?
8/9: 5 innings, 6 hits, 3 er, 1 hr, 2 bb's, 8 k's
8/27: 5.2 innings, 7 hits, 3 er, 1 hr, 1 bb, 3 k's
That's exactly what we should be hoping for from him.
Starts that give you a chance.
Those are perfectly reasonable starts for a 4th or 5th starter, when the ML average start is 5.1 innings.
His 9/3 start at Arizona gave you a below average chance at winning, but wasn't a disaster.
Below average, but also reasonable in the context that he's a 4th or 5th starter.
9/3: 4.2 innings, 6 hits, 4 er, 2 hr's, 1 bb, 7 k's
Those 3 starts seem to me to be what we should expect most of the time from him.
