McKenna two Ks with bases loaded less than one out. Guy absolutely sucks

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

Nope, weak groundout.  Bummer.  Pitch count rising though.  91 thru 4.  5th will be his last most likely.

Damn! Our offense is killing us with RISP.

That's what you get when you start McKenna over Cowser. I get Cowser has been terrible, but I'd rather watch him struggle than McKenna because at least then it feels like you are helping his progress and building towards something.

Not seeing how that wasn't catcher interference, unless he has to wake up in the morning on the basepath to get that call.

Either way, it was another dumbass send by Mansolino.

Wouldn't it be obstruction?

Fielder's obstruct and runners interfere.

Build towards the second coming of Chris Davis perhaps?

Flaherty looks as good as any Oriole starter, period.

The catcher is not permitted to block the runner's path to the plate unless he is in possession of the ball, though blocking the path of the runner in a legitimate attempt to receive a throw is not considered a violation. The runner can be ruled safe if the umpire determines the catcher violated this rule. But per a September 2014 memorandum to the rule, the runner may still be called out if he was clearly beaten by the throw. Backstops are not subject to this rule on force plays.

Maybe the bolded is the reason Hays was still out?

It's a poorly written rule, because all the LF has to do is throw the ball along or near the base path for the catcher to get out there and wait for it (which is exactly what Kirk did).

I wonder what their season average is with RISP?  And where does it rank league wise?  It can't be very good.

I hope that bases loaded and one out fail doesn't come back to haunt them.

A 53 HR season for Cowser seems kind of optimistic.

You make a good point.

It's a poorly written rule. Everybody knows what blocking the plate really is. The verbiage of the rule can be misconstrued.

? Interference would be if the catcher tripped the runner. I'm saying all the C has to do is sit his big fat butt out on the basepath and wait for the ball, so long as the ball is coming in on the track of the base path. That's what the rule Mackus just linked to implied.

And when they set out to remove blocking the plate from the equation, they did it to prevent base runners from trucking catchers.

Tripping the runner would be obstruction :)  Nobody on the defense can interfere on a batted ball.  Only baserunners interfere.  Exception is catcher's interference (bat hitting glove on a swing), which is inconsistent terminology.

I applaud russ' pedantry on this matter!

Oh, and again, all of that was because Mansolino made a horrible decision to send Hays.

So I guess the rule can look really bad if the 3B coach makes a horrible send. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
