Food for thought... through 2 games, comparison to last year... Pass Plays are "pass + sack", Rushes are "Rush - Knees"

2022:  61 Pass Plays, 44 Rushes

2023:  59 Pass Plays, 68 Rushes

I get it, some of the runs are Lamar running when the pocket collapses. But still, that's a NOTABLE and I think / hope very intentional thing on the part of Monken.   Same time, while some of the runs are Lamar taking off, remember the two plays late in week 1 vs HOU where the crowd booed the hell out of the quick "screens" to Flowers behind the LOS... those were really like long hand-offs to get the ball quickly in his hands, a high percentage safe throw.  They didn't get much, looked kind of ugly when blocking broke down... but... they kept the clock running.  Which is valuable when you have the ball, and the lead, and are in VERY high percentage Justin Tucker range.  75% completion through 2 games, which again... tends to keep the ball moving forward (field position at worst) and the clock running (less game clock the D has to handle themselves).

It's early, but this has to be the mode Monken sticks with throughout the season hopefully, including post-season... and even if they get down a few points early.

He has 11 scrambles already.

I think Monken is incorporating nontraditional RPOs where Lamar has the option to throw or scramble early.  He's currently on track to almost double his previous career high for scrambles.  They say you can usually tell an RPO from a play action if the OL goes into pass blocking or run blocking.  But with these guys it's really hard to tell.  They had one crazy blocking scheme where the center pulled on a pass play to block the edge rusher, and it froze the 2 ILBs into thinking it was a run play, and Lamar chucked it over both linebackers to Andrews for a completion.  I'm guessing they're incorporating these hybrid blocking schemes to facilitate Lamar scrambling.  It's tough to know though whether these are truly RPOs or whether they're designed passes with wacky blocking schemes built in as oh-shit buttons for Lamar.

Zay Flowers won multiple times at the LOS and was missed by Lamar. Good breakdown. Some criticism mixed with the good things too. OL gave a lot of clean pockets and Bengals looked pretty lost defensively. As noted, we left some points out there.

Ardarius Washington put on IR with a chest injury. Not sure when that happened. Losing anybody in the secondary is bad at this point.

He put out a Justin Fields video and i got through about 5 minutes of it and he was just ripping Fields a new one.  That video is 90 minutes long, and from the comments it sounds like he's ripping Fields for most of that time.  I think he's intentionally nitpicky because that's what he's supposed to do, but it's pretty clear he loves Lamar (at least IMO.)

Sounds like we're bringing Kenyan Drake back. I like that move if it happens. He offers more versatility than Gordon and he's a pass catching option out of the backfield.

When I saw that he was in the building yesterday, I figured he would be back.  I thought he did a nice job last year.

I think he fits better than Gordon.

This one stings.  The kid was playing well.  He worked his ass off and won the job.  Next Man up...Arthur Maulet

Brandon Stephens can slide over into the slot assuming Humphrey is back.

Marlo also can play the slot. Has done so often.

There has been a trend to put #1 receivers in the slot the past couple. Obviously Kupp when healthy. But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Justin Jefferson have increasingly lined up there. Obviously in man coverage they would just switch presnap, but if you're in zone and you think they're going to line up their best receiver in the slot it makes some sense. Unless you want Stephens or Ronald Darby on Jefferson.

Stephens has become the swiss Army knife and is playing well.  I think he is going to play a lot of free safety, when the Ravens are playing 3 safeties.

If Marlon can go this week, do you keep him on a pitch count to (a) ease him back in and (b) it's the Colts with Gardner Minshew so we should be fine?

I don't know. If he's good enough to go, let him go. Let score dictate when he comes out. If he's not, wait a week if needed. Just held the Bengals trio to a modest day without him. The Colts have Pittman and I'd be lying if I could tell you their #2 receiver without looking it up.

I read they were looking at James Robinson too. Surprised to see he's just 25.

Looks like Anthony Richardson may not be playing since he's in concussion protocal. Can't say I know much about Minshew.

I don't like facing Minshew. Trap game. He's better than Richardson.

Very hard not to be a big fan of Monken. Just love this. “Being a coordinator means fix it!”
