They probably needed at least 2 reliable SP arms. Rodriguez, Kremer, Bradish are still somewhat unknowns. Are we going to rely on Voth again? Wells could go back to the BP. Means returning from major surgery.

Gibson is a fine addition, but shouldn't be the key addition of the off season.

They should be able to get two starters that are better, easily. The easily applies to both parts of that sentence btw. They choose not to and they deserve to be bashed for that imo unless they only get one better starter and heavily invest elsewhere, which I'd also be good with.

This signing was meant to replace Jordan Lyles, but are there numbers for Gibson that could point to him being better? Read and find out!

Im not thrilled with the Gibson pick up.

Yes he is an inning eater, and back of the rotation type of guy, with a high ERA.

He isnt the type of player, I target to improve the ball club into a contender.

He's the guy you sign to close out your off-season when you need one more reliable arm to take the mound every fifth day. He's not intended to be the highlight of your off-season.

Lyles had virtually no chance of being an above league avg pitcher. Gibson has a real chance to do it

Gibson vs Lyles is just a distraction and not an important conversation, IMO.

THats true but if Gibson is a 105+ guy vs 85 or 90 thats pretty important

I see no need to compare his results next year to Lyles (either Lyles '22 or '23).  Gibson wasn't added instead of Lyles.  He was added instead of a better but more expensive (cash or prospects) SP.  Lets compare him to Bassitt or Walker or guys like that who were available.

The only way to absolve the front office of not doing more to address the SP will be if the SP ends up really good anyways because of the guys who were already here.  The reason to pursue external SP was to lock up a couple spots with good expected performance and buy down the risk of the less proven guys.  I still would think it was a terrible plan, but sometimes you can get away with bad planning, and its not like we don't have intriguing arms.  Its just a lot easier to fill 3 spots with a handful of intriguing but unproven guys than it is to fill 4 or 5.  And that also doesn't start to count that you really need 7 or 8 starters to get through a year.

What Mackus said. The fact that we are discussing that Gibson might have some upside versus Lyles speaks volumes to our offseason so far.

From Ken Rosenthal via MLBTR. This is...different...than the things we heard in the past.

.....Baltimore’s offer was preferable to Gibson because of the Orioles’ strong infield defense, the more pitcher-friendly left-field dimensions at Camden Yards, and the chance to work with catcher Adley Rutschman.

...or maybe he isn't vaccinated and doesn't want to live in Canada.

Kyle Gibson is currently tied with Eric Bedard for #351 in All Time Ks.

With another 100 Ks this season he'll move up into top 300 of all time.

Side note since I'm looking at it....Kevin Gausman has 1455 which is top 250 All-Time

Good comparison. Fact is neither one of them should have been on this team.

Gibson, IMO has been better than the numbers.  His bad games tend to be very bad, but he has had good games at the right time.

His last 2 have not been good.  I wonder if pitching on 6 or 7 days has done him more harm than good.
