It matters if the ump thinks Kluber was trying to throw around the runner. It matters if the ump thinks Choi could've maybe had a chance at catching it if he had seen it clearly and could've moved off the base sooner.

Vavra was definitely out of the lane. If he's in the lane, then this call doesn't get made. Run in the right spot and you don't give the ump a chance to make an extreme judgement.

But again, Hyde isn't shy about getting tossed if he thinks the ump has made a bad judgement call. Maybe he hated it but just didn't feel like arguing more, but until he says otherwise I'm gonna assume he knows it was the right call too.

Christ, it was a bad call.

Let it go.

From the resources I've found, only in high school ball is the umpire allowed to make a determination that the fielder tried to throw around the runner.  In college and pro ball the throw has to be catchable and in the vicinity of the bag in order to call runner's interference.  Given that Kluber threw the ball to Narnia he really caught a break here.  I also thought that Vavra grazed the foul chalk with his right foot toward the end of his run to first, but I might be mistaken there.  It was awful close.  Both feet have to be clear to the inside of the chalk.

Watching the game in Tampa on Ballys, their RSN. The commentators were discussing the Vavra play and agreed it was a good call, though one that doesn’t always get made. They then showed the play earlier in the inning where Urias pulled Mountcastle off the bag and he missed the tag on Bettencourt. They said “if you are going to call interference on Vavra then you have to call it on Bettencourt!”And they showed him literally on the infield turf just before getting to first. They surmised that is what Hyde was so pissed about, and rightfully so in their eyes.

The rule just says "interferes with the fielder taking the throw". I don't know how it's advised to umps to call it, but I think you could stretch the meaning to include the throw being errant because it's trying to avoid the runner and thus the fielder can't field it. If the umps are taught specifically to not interpret it that way, which sounds like you're reading may be the case, then it'd still be open to the judgement of what throws are plausibly fieldable and what aren't.

All of it is avoided if the runner just runs in the right spot.

Kind of a curious move by the Ray's to use a position player to pitch. I guess their bull pen is maxed out.

I can definitely throw harder than that. I pitched in high school and now I'm 54.
