Would you be asking this question if it were your daughter who we were bringing home? Or would the fact that she had a vape pen with a substance that grows from the earth have made you okay with her rotting away in a Russian penal colony?

Rotting away in a Russia jail is inhumane.

Just because the substance goes on earth, makes it legal. We dont have the right to pick and chose which laws we adhere to.

There are US citizens rotting away in Russia and for crimes they did not commit.

What if it was your loved dead family member, as a result of this arms dealer. How would you feel?

Keep in mind, there are more than 1 dead US person because of this arms dealer.

I certainly celebrate for her, that is good news.

Was her arrest/treatment atypical from a Russian standpoint, or are there other Americans that aren't celebrities that are still over there?

There are others over there.

Paul Whelan comes to my mind.

Moscow said there was 17 Americans in Russian Prisons, and that was last year.

Ok, got it. If it were your daughter, you’d be fine her staying there for some pot.

Ok, so no. If it were your daughter, you’d be fine her staying there for some pot. Got it.

As usual, you twist things around, why I am not surprise.

So there no sadness that a mass murdered is released?

I never said, she should rot in prison. I said, the price paid was very steep.

Did the ghost of Bill DeWitt make the trade for Griner?

Straight up for Viktor Bout AKA " The Merchant of Death" ?

Should have at least gotten back a shipping container of Russian Vodka in addition to Griner.

God speed to Griner.

Hopefully, Bout dies in a fiery car crash once he hits Russian soil.

I give the trade a "C".

Mass murderer requires proper context. He was an arms dealer. Quite frankly someone that is bad to America primarily because he armed some groups that we oppose, not because his behavior is especially different than that of America itself. Oh, and our government unknowingly used his services in Iraq. He also served 11 years of a 25 year sentence.

Selling weapons to Terrorists for them to use, doesnt make him less guilty.

He was at the time a major arms dealer with a large client base.

I pray that he doesnt reenter that life.

Who said anything about less guilty. I was providing context to your statement because generally when someone says mass murderer, people think of something different than what this guy is, or what Tony Stark is in the Marvel Universe.

ok, point taken. I used the wrong label.

I should have stuck to the merchant of death, which does a better job of explaining who he is.

I’m not trying to twist anything around, I’m sorry. You’re a good man, and I just must’ve misunderstood. I know what you’re saying about the person we let go. I guess the way I look at it is that the Russians offered a way to bring a wrongfully detained American home, and we brought her home. I feel strongly about that, and don’t really care about the price.

Whelan himself doesn't seem to share the sentiment.

Why was Whelan arrested?

Paul Whelan was discharged from the Marines for bad conduct in 2008 after being convicted of larceny. He later worked as a global security executive for the auto parts supplier BorgWarner.

He was arrested in December 2018 while visiting Moscow for a friend's wedding and charged with espionage by Russian intelligence officials.

Thanks. When I first clicked on the CNN link above I didnt realize the article was as long as it was explaining his situation.

Ive been doing some reading on Whalen, whom, until yesterday, I never knew existed.

I ran this notion through and thought, well, maybe he is just a CIA plant with cover, as he is ex-marine and working for giant Autoparts supplier chain allowing him freedom to travel freely.

Not that I believe anything the Russian government says.

But, deeper inspection, the guy was dishonorably discharged for trying to steal 10K.

How does this guy with this large red flag on his resume quickly rise the ranks to senior security executive for this large chain?

So what is the real truth, we may never know.

My money is currently on Russian being behind the scenes, and tried to use him to barter with Trump and it failed. Bidden hasnt seen interested in him, for whatever reason.

If he is innocent, my heart goes out to him and his family.

Old Man is right - even though he's been in a Russian prison since 2018, no one had ever heard of Whelan until yesterday.  Why, then, did he suddenly become so important?  Is it possible there's an agenda involved?

Wanting to bring wrongly imprisoned Americans home should be bipartisan. This should not be viewed as an opportunity to hurt the President. There are no good/fair trades in these types of scenarios. So Biden should’ve let BG waste her life away in a Russian penal colony because it’s bad politics? Nothing is off base anymore.
