Oats or Enfield would be the homeruns, I think.

Enfield is a JHU and Maryland business school grad, so local ties.

Oats has a huge buyout, so not sure he's an option.

Yep.  Odom was at UMBC obviously.   Brey's dream job has always been MD.

Oats would the guy I'd throw everything at.

Yep.

He's the guy I'm saying to the donors... if you want the homerun hire, pony up.

If not, there are other good / cheaper options....  but probably nobody you'd rather have.

Enfield just went to the Elite 8 and didn't get an extension.  He's only singed through next season.  Wonder if USC is worried about lingering fallout from the recruiting scandal 4-5 years ago?  I don't know enough about that to know if it's anything that should scare away future employers.

I'm not sure why Oats would leave Alabama for Maryland.

You go young or you go big name. No Brey, Dixons, Alford types.

I kind of like Alford.  4 different schools to the Tournament.  Big Ten, and Pac 12 history.  At 57 he isn't that old.

But I get your point.

MD is a significantly better basketball program than Alabama, where you're always 2nd fiddle at best to football.  If MD made the financial commitment, it's a more attractive job.

Does Maryland basketball really have the lure it had 20-30 years ago? I think we sometimes overvalue what Maryland basketball really is.

We haven't been a consistent Sweet 16 deep tourney team since the late 90's early 2000's. High school and college kids these days don't even remember when Maryland was great.

It's less than it was before Turgeon got here, I'd agree.  But far more than it was before Gary got here.

I still think it's 2nd tier program, just behind the blue bloods.  Not a top 8 or 10 or however many programs have immense history and have remained relevant perpetually.  But in that next group of 15-20 teams behind them.  Where they fall within that group is kind of irrelevant, hard to distinguish, and very dependent on recency.

I think we'd land a good coach.  Don't know whether they'd prefer a more proven guy with some clout or more of an up-and-coming young guy, but whoever they go with there will be reason to be more excited than we would be sticking with Turgeon.

Significantly better program.  Only reason he wouldn't leave would be financial.  That's true for probably 25 programs, not just Maryland.  Alabama isn't remotely close to the top of the college basketball world.

Oats has a huge buyout and I'm sure would insist that his new school pay for it.

Firing Turgeon and hiring some random dude off the street would probably inspire more confidence than Turgeon currently has.

We really screwed up not hiring Sean Miller, but at least Melo gave us some fun years.

Brey turned Maryland down when we hired Turgeon, I think it's time to move on there. No re-do's, he didn't want us then, move on.

Oats, lol - no chance. Come on, we need to be realistic here.

I'd love Enfield, and given the lack of a contract extension there, maybe he could be had. Maryland needs to be aggressive here.

No - but still significantly better than Alabama, which has been a pretty poor basketball school prior to the immediately recent past.

Would love to be wrong about Oats. He’d be the top of my list.

Oats is in a good position where he can just wait for a blue blood job to open up. Given the time he spent in the region, wouldn't be surprised if he'd jump at the chance to replace Boeheim in Syracuse.
