In this hypothetical scenario, you are the GM. The Angelos brothers inform you that the team's payroll may increase to $100 million for each of the next three seasons. While the first year is a hard number, the following seasons may allow for even more, depending on how the team performs and other factors.

What would you do with the additional funds as you eye the upcoming 2022 season and beyond?

I started this thread to learn.  I'm not payroll savvy, especially when attempting to factor in arbitration and deferred payments and such. My first thought was free agency, and whether it would make any sense to spend, while also trying to determine whether or not to lock up certain key young players for years to come. I look forward to seeing what our posters think.

Starting pitching would be first on the agenda.

Completely revamp how they prepare pitchers in the farm system for the major league level.  Pretty clear they don't have a clue so far.

Sign Eduardo Rodriguez and another decent SP for the rotation.

Sign either Carlos Correa or Corey Seager for SS.

Sign Eduardo Escobar or Kyle Seager for 3B.

Profit.

Do we know what the approximate payroll will be next year?

That's bold, for sure.

If you're counting the $23M that Davis will be paid (less his deferments), probably around $55-60M.  If not, under $40M.

I'd guess you're looking at about $20M or less for arbitration guys. Mancini, Means, Santander, Scott, Fry, and possibly Lopez.

I assume Severino and any others will be non-tendered.

20 league minimum or close to it guys will cost about $12M.

$17M less whatever they defer to 23/24 for Davis. Plus a few deferred payments for some past contracts.

That's just over $50M. Closer to $45M depending on the specifics for Davis' deferment.

A projection I made about a month ago. Don't think anything has changed.

My guess is they don't add more than $10M in new guarantees.

I think we will keep the payroll within 5 M of this year.

Sign the top two available TOR starting pitchers. Work the rest out.

Here is a Free Agent list by MLBTraderRumors.com. Who would you consider making a serious offer for, if anyone?

I'm not sure if you meant to do this, but this is the FA list after the 2022 season.

It's rare that an entire FA group is this un-interesting, but if they don't do something this off-season, there's nothing really to look forward to the next offseason.

A veteran catcher (Chirinos, Gomes, Ramos)

Check in on the big shortstops in the highly unlikely case that somebody slips through the cracks. But realistically sign Jose Iglesias or Andrelton Simmons. Or trade for Paul Dejong.

Eduardo Escobar or Kyle Seager if his option isn't picked up.

Plenty of options for pitching that are a step up from Matt Harvey/Wade LeBlanc/etc.

29-year old Jon Gray, the RHP from the Rockies will likely get about 4yr/$80m this off-season. It could be more.  I believe that Gray would be a major upgrade for our staff and my main target.  Boston LHP and former O's prospect Eduardo Rodriguez would be another solid signing.  Getting either is unlikely, but this exercise is intended to determine what we would do (or rigorously attempt  to do).  Bringing in two quality starters would go a long way in helping to help right this ship.  Grayson Rodriguez, Baumann, Bradish, DL Hall, and our other young starters would all benefit.

While their (Gray/E.Rod) two contracts would be expensive, they wouldn't break the bank nor prevent us from looking into other free agents for '22 or '23.

Agreed, but the likely hood of them doing something like that is pretty next to zero.

I'm ok with Gray as a target.  I doubt the Orioles are in for anyone of merit, but whatever.

...but I am wondering who told you Gray would be getting 4/80 or more.  You should probably stop listening to them.
