This was outrageous

Love Lyles swagger.
I don't. But I'm pretty much an underage boomer. Was still pulling for him in a big way.

Does this make sense? Maybe not.

I got a dumb question. So on the 800 meters. They start in lanes of various length disparity. Isn’t that a major advantage for the person on the way outside? Can’t they just cut across to the inside and shave some distance?
Does this make sense? Maybe not.
They all stay in their lanes until they reach the break line, the straight away after the first turn, you'll see it marked with cones. The runners can then proceed to lane 1

So there is no advantage at all the being in a certain lane?

Less important for the longer distances. Shorter races matters a little more the best to get lane 4,5. Those are good in that you can keep an eye on your direct competition.

Big day on the track today. Women's 3000 steeple chase final, women's 200 meter final (Can Alfred pull off the double?), men's 400 semi final, the women's semis for the 400 hurdles, and the men's 1500 meter final.
The 400 Hurdles semis should be good. Look for McLaughlin and Bol to easily win their respective heats, they may pick up the intensity a bit from the opening round. But they will still wait for Thursday's final before going all out.( Don't be suprised to see another WR on Thursday)
The highlight of today though for me is the men's 1500 meter final. Jakob Ingebritsen of Norway and Josh Kerr of Great Brittain are the 2 favorites these two are the cofavorites, they are fast in form and they flat out can't stand each other. Ing is the reigning Olympic champion and has the faster pr but Kerr beat him at last years worlds and this year's only matchup in Oregon in May. Sometimes in championship finals you see a slow 3 laps and then it simply becomes a one lap kick race. I don't expect that. Ingebritsen will want to push the pace to stretch the field out. If he gets caught up in traffic it could spell trouble. While the winner will most likely be one of those two there are a couple of Americans to keep an eye on as well, Cole Hocker and Yared Naguse. Hocker has the better kick, but Naguse has the faster pr and is more likely to push the pace and go with the leaders( he lead the whole way in the semi heat which is hard to do). Their odds of winning are lower but that didn't stop me from putting a few bux on them for giggles.

I had made it all day without seeing results so I could watch live in prime time and then just happened to see the results on a ticker. Dang it.
Awesome race though!

3 thoughts about that race.
1: Ingebrigsten, I know a lot of people don't like him, but without him in there to push the pace at absurdly fast levels we don't get that great race nor the finish we saw. I was just thinking of the 2016 final and how lousy of a race it was until the last lap.
2: The Americans (Nguse, Hocker and Kessler) having all 3 of them in there was a big benefit to all of their success. You could see them working together out there and I think it had to be of some relief to know that they wouldn't be boxed in by their teammates and could move when need be.
3. That move by Hocker on the homestretch A+, coming off the final turn you could see him try and go inside buy Ing blocked it off. Cole even gave him a lttle nudge then regrouped and shortly there after the opening was there and he took it. To be patient in that moment and trust your kick (rather than panic and try to get outside) was amazing to see.

3 more finals today the highlight being the women's 400 meter final. Mclaughlin-Levrone and Bol are so far ahead of anyone else in this field. Winner most likely needs to set a new WR to get Gold
