For whatever it's worth, my impression was also always that he dinged the O's system for its lack of international talent, seemingly independent of the actual quality of the rest of the system. Like didn't he pretty much say exactly that when he had us in the bottom half a couple years ago when everyone else had us top 10?

ETA: well yes, actually it's in this very thread, from Feb. 2021

Keith Law: Also, the expectation that a team that has completely ignored international scouting – you know, where the best player in the NL came from, where the #1 and #3 prospects on my top 100 came from as well as the guys at 16 and 19 and 20 and 24 and 25 and 25 – for a decade, and that has zero international prospects of their own signing in their top 20, would have a top ten system is delusional

He absolutely used the lack of international talent as part of his justification. I do not think it's fair at all to say it was independent of the actual quality of the rest of the system. I know there are a lot of people who dislike Law and I know he has been too low on the O's farm the past few years, but he is not a dumb person, and he'd have to be in order to literally rank the system based on its actual quality but then to drop it down because of a lack of Latin American presence. That would indeed be delusional. I think it's pretty clear that he was simply saying that it's super difficult to get into the top 10 while ignoring a significant talent stream.

Maybe this response will answer RichardZ question too.

He absolutely has done that it in the past and - in fact - he's doing it here.  He's literally ranked the Orioles system lower - in the face of all of the other rankings - because they didn't have enough Latin talent.  NOW...we can have the best system we've had because we have Latin talent.  That is a crazy position.

If you cut off one avenue of talent acquisition, that obviously can be a challenge (do everything you can, everywhere you can), but using that opportunity (or not using it) isn't the definition of the talent in the system  The talent in the system is the definition of talent in the system.

If you have more talent than everyone else, then you have more talent than everyone else.  Where anyone hails from is irrelevant.

It's your opinion that he's doing that. I think it's the wrong opinion as explained in my prior posts.

Surprised he has Bradfield over Cowser.

Also a little surprising he has Lord so much higher than Baumeister.

Love seeing all that Latin American talent slowly infiltrating the top prospect lists.

Fangraphs always is super high on the O's guys. That's the highest we've seen for any of them, right? Except Holliday as unanimous #1.

4 top-25 is crazy.

They haven’t been high on him, was behind Beavers last year, not close to top 100.

Nothing wrong with being behind beavers

Mayo was 15 on Baseball Prospectus and 19 on ESPN.

1, 19, 30, and 32 in all of baseball and likely 2 if not 3 of them won't make the OD roster. Wow that's some serious depth.

Getting technical. His draft pick slot was acquired in the Sulser/Scott trade.

I forgot about that. Still, did the Ravens acquire Lamar via draft or trade? Would anyone say trade?

You can basically never trade for draft picks in baseball while you can do it freely in football so I felt like indicating they got Fabian in a different way than Holliday/Mayo/etc

Not that it matters - but considering Fabian a trade acquisition is a weird take.

Good top 30, though.

With Basallo's arm injury, and how it affects his ability to catch at least early in the season, we can end any thought that we will have the #1 overall prospect for the 4th straight year. It was a good run though.
