Got to love this line from Law:

The O’s are where they are in the standings because they have drafted unbelievably well since Mike Elias took over as GM, and if they start hitting on IFAs like they seem to have hit on Basallo, we should all run for cover.

Law seems to have come around and believes in this front office. Has had glowing things to say recently about a lot of their guys and process.

These comments don't really belong here, but you can keep pulling out quotes like this from nearly every National public source.

It's 100% incorrect.  The Orioles are not where they are in the standings because "they have drafted unbelievably well" or [another pundit].."they are calling up a top 100 prospect every week".

I'm not saying the Orioles haven't drafted well, I think they have, but THAT is not causal to this 2023 roster (or the success of 2022).  It's just not.  It's the actual names, acquisition and performance, not some notional perspective of process that has delivered this year.

That is not to say some (hell, all) of those players might not significantly contribute in the future, but it's not why they are winning today and if you can win today, you can win tomorrow.

Next I'll write too many words in the response to the obvious 1st pick in 2019 and the importance of the 2nd rd pick in the same year.

Rutschman and Henderson are causal to this roster.  They were drafted by Elias.  Drafting well is causal to this roster being as successful as it has been.

Basallo calls next after Holliday graduates.

But agreed, no Mayo is very weird.

Here's what Law said about Mayo in the comments:

@Nondo C. I do like Mayo quite a bit. He’s a top 100 guy. Omitting someone from this list doesn’t mean the player is bad.

No one accused Law of not liking Mayo...   the surprise is that he likes 60+ guys better.

Yeah, I know pretty much nothing about almost all of the other teams’ prospects, but at the very least he had Mayo below Norby (if he was an honorable mention), which seems questionable to me but what do I know.

In another one of Law's comments, he said he sees Mayo in RF, for whatever that's worth.

Wait, so Mayo went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school?  He would have been 16 at the time of the shooting.

I mean this as a serious question.

Why do we elevate the position of Keith Law.  Does he have any merit other than he's created content through access?

He's said some of the dumbest things I've ever heard and I don't see where his opinions wouldn't just be the bizarro world version of other public info.

He was a Special Asst to the GM.

He's not an idiot.  He's got strong opinions.  Sometimes he's right, sometimes he not.

The biggest viable knock against him isn't his acumen, it's his attitude.

Because he comes from a scouting position himself and goes and views guys with his own two eyes, vs just relying on opinions of other scouts. He is highly thought of enough that he has been offered various front office positions in baseball (and has held some).

He has had a very poor relationship with Baltimore under past management (and especially ownership). I don't know what the exact story is there, but I'm sure there is one given he's fairly local. I think because of that relationship he's been tougher on things here, or at least, more "prove it to me before I'll get on board".

Seems to have come around on the current regime, accepts they march to the beat of their own drum, and seems to have backed off a bit on his belief the front office will meddle. Helped a lot that we got in the int'l market.

A lot of his complaints completely hold water, same stuff most of us have griped about. I think his issues were more that he just didn't have any confidence in previous management teams here and for him to really go in on a player they had to prove it, and this regime has done just that.

I think Law is a horse's ass, but he does have some background.

I think it is possible he felt like he had too many Orioles on the list.  He is trying to see clicks and if he omits to many teams, their fans tune him out.  His top 60 may not be his actual top 60.

mlb.com updated top 100

Orioles notes.

Adley Rutschman moved up to #4 on the top 100, but he's probably really #2.  Luis Robert (#3) is getting everyday ABs right now and won't qualify shortly and Lux (#2) should have already lost his status.  Rays' SS Wander Franco still sits at #1.

Grayson Rodriguez bumped back to #40, just behind Emerson Hancock at #39.  GRod also fell just outside the top10 RHP with Hanccock getting the #10 spot.  Like Rutschman, he'll likely move up by the end the season in the top 5 or so as a number of guys on the list ahead of him lose their prospect eligibility.

Heston Kjerstad showed up on the mlb.com list at #68.  That feels a little better than the other list (BA?) that had him at 99.  Big group of the drafted OFers in that range.  Sort of the back of where I thought they'd go.  Seems some guys got some promotional love on this list where other guys didn't get it. Alex Krilloff is #35 on the updated list and listed as the #10 OFer, just for perspective.

DL Hall also bumped back a little at #77.  Like GRod, he got bumped off the top 10 LHP with Brailyn Marquez (CHC) sitting at #10 and #76 on the big list.  Should be a couple prospect graduates that will have Hall well into top 10 by the end of the year.

Mountcastle fell out of the top100 with 13 2020 draftees being added to the list.  Still listed as the #4 1B, although that's because they listed Tork at 3B....which gives him an overall bump on the 3B list versus the 1B list (likely intentional by DET)

New Orioles top 10

1. Rutschman

2. GRod

3. Kjerstad

4. Hall

5. Mountcastle

6. Henderson

7. Jordan Westburg

8. Diaz

9. Baumann

10. Kremer

other 2020 draftees

12. Hudson Haskin

17. Carter Baumler

19. Anthony Servideo

22. Coby Mayo

Look how far Mayo has moved up from the start of this thread....

How is DL Hall still a top 100 guy?
