One of the worst playoff meltdowns I've seen from this team. Waved the white flagged and the Isles keep punching them in their mouth. This after 7 power plays for the Caps.

Yeah the Islanders looked like a completely different set of players in the 3rd while the Caps looked like they were in their 5th overtime.

Pathetic playoffs so far. NYI controlling the 3rd, despite the Caps being down a goal. Not used to this lethargy in the playoffs. Just awful.

Good riddance, Reirdon. Easily the biggest mistake in the Ovechkin era, even more than Erat... letting Trotz walk and handing the keys over to this 80's porn star looking goof.

Reirdon=Oates. Can't wait til he's gone. This team is such an underachieving group. Down 0-2... still no urgency. Zero pressure on defense leads to an Isles goal on their 4th SOG on the possession. Then the 3rd Caps penalty right off the face off after the goal. This series is just about over. Tip of the cap to Trotz. Running circles around his protégé.

This hot mess is much more on the players than the coach. I mean you said it yourself, the 3rd penalty of the game. Aren't we the most penalized team in hockey? Even if the other team isn't scoring that's taking time away from your offense getting anything going. That's not the coach, that's players being lazy or being caught out of position though. I like Dillon a lot and would like him to stay, but man there are some defensive weaknesses on that back line. As weird as it is to say, we could end up with some addition by subtraction this offseason with the expansion draft.

I didn't really expect much after such a long break and restarting, kinda thought it's a terrible idea to have a break as long as the offseason and then expect guys to get into postseason form...but it is what it is.

We just enjoyed a several year stretch of Trotz, when the team didn't do stupid crap like that. And never had a problem with motivation. Players are a reflection on their coach. This team is deep and talented.

What do you like about Reirdon?

I can handle losing to a hot team in the playoffs like we love to do. I can't handle and accept crapping the bed because you can't be bothered to match the other, inferior teams effort level.

Also, the Islanders had the same break, and had to play their way in. So that's not a valid excuse IMO. If anything, this core has been together so long, I expected them to have a leg up on muscle memory due to that.

This is on Reirdon IMO. He's a lousy coach.

Trotz had a year where they played almost just like this actually. I can't remember which one, but they retooled the D the next year because they had too many offensive guys, and not enough physical on the blue line, we got pushed around and took a lot of stupid penalties and our PK unit was fairly brutal. I remember Orlov in particular was a huge problem there. Lots of stick penalties cause he'd get caught too far forward, bite on the first move, and then hook guys as they went past him.

It's not so much that I like him, or care really, he's got a fairly neutral system. It's not like Hunter's over the top defense first, or Oates' complete lack of defense. I think the problem is just that a coach can only do so much, and the players are just playing with zero heart like they barely showed up to play this thing and they are going through the motions. I actually caught a bit of it in Oshie's comment about Rask opting out yesterday, talking about guys with young families (which is like most of our team) really struggling with it, and wanting to play now that they are here, but it always being in the back of their head. I just don't think we are really here right now. I mean even Ovi's comment the other night when he missed the net, "shit happens?" that's VERY un-Ovi like. I kind of get the impression they were happy with the season being over, and aren't really on board with this late summer playoff thing.

I really don't see as much to pin on the coach himself, but he's the easy one to go after when there's not really a specific finger to point, so I totally see why you say that. I really feel like had we taken the other path, signed Trotz to a more expensive deal, Reirden would have been the one going to Long Island, and would be whooping our ass right now. I just think the horses have been led to the water, they just aren't drinking, cause they are wishing they were at home, or having a normal summer.

He sucks, that's what you can pin on him. No heart since Trotz left. This sucks.

Great goal from Kuzy on the power play. But now back to even strength, where the Islanders own their ass.

I told a friend the other night I fully expected them to get pwned that night, and the real wake up call was going to be this game. If they can come back here and win two I won't write them off, but I give them good odds at being out in 5 or 6 games right now. Like I said, it just doesn't really seem like they want to be there.

I can't pin heart on the coach though, for youth sports sure, you have to do some motivating of your players. At this level, if they can't get themselves up for what they are being paid to do, that's gotta be on the players.

If he was asking them to play a certain way that was leading to some of this stuff I'd totally agree with you, I just think it's one of those situations where it's hard to point and say what exactly they are doing wrong, aside from looking lazy, and that leaves no one else to blame but the coach, even if it's not really his fault.

I think you were ready to fire Trotz before 2018 if I remember correctly. But again, I don't blame you, you have high expectations for this team and don't want to take any of their BS.

That Trotz rant in 2018 was after like 12 years of playoff failure. Wasn't really about him so much as wanting to try anything to get them over the hump. Reirdon has done nothing to keep him in this job.

I do think great coaches help teams gain and maintain focus and motivation. So I disagree there.

Meanwhile, they've found their legs and are playing with much more swag right now, but they need to score a couple more here. No excuses.

What a disaster.

Can't just flip a switch vs. a team that plays as disciplined as the Isles. Shame on them for not coming out ready to play playoff hockey in a pandemic. Leaves a very sour taste.
