I demand an overall grade of our draft right now

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

A-

We got the best player in the draft, another mid-1st round talent, and a bunch of high floor college players that at the very least should boost the competitiveness of our lower minors and maybe a few of them break out.

I give them a B+.

I think they should have taken a shot at one of the HS kids that dropped to R3.

Adley himself might be worth a B+.

I think Henderson is gonna cost most of whatever excess slot money we have.

I used to tell my parents grades were over rated.

Got to get Gunnar signed.  With a name like Gunnar, how can he miss.

Clearly he was a guy they were excited to get, so they must feel pretty good about getting him to sign.

3rd round pick and HS SS Tyler Callihan has already signed for 1.5M.

Sets some kind of barometer for Gunnar.

So, drafting Rutschman and Torkelson in back-to-back drafts would be a nice little shot in the arm, eh?

Stanford plays Mississippi St at 3 on ESPN2... we drafted Kyle Stowers (CF) with our 2nd rd compensatory pick, Maverick Hundley © 6th round and Andrew Daschbach (1B) in the 11th round... all Stanford stars.

Rutschman has finals this week, expect him to sign next week.

Elias said he expects to sign everyone drafted in the top 10 rounds.

I guess I didn't pay as much attention to this draft as others, but I'll throw this out there.

My initial perceptions of the draft are in line with what I'd like to see happen in the draft.

Drafted the best player and didn't play games with that pick.

Drafted a consensus top guy on the board when given the opportunity (for example they passed on Nolan Jones when given an opportunity in the past)

Drafted some high floor guys with a chance to develop some impact.

Drafted elite skills that have the potential to translate as everyday players.

Drafted a bunch of guys with scouting reports after rd10.

The only thing I'd maybe done differently is play a little defense with Lieter specifically so he couldn't get to the Yankees/RedSox.

Anyway, feels like a good draft just looking at opportunity/profiles, acknowledging we know nothing real for a while.

Looking at the Orioles draft for a minute, I hadn't noticed this before, maybe it was mentioned.

There was discussion about how many pitchers the orioles took - or more correctly - didn't take....

....but looking at the draft they only took 2 HS kids (#2 Gunner Henderson and #5 Darell Hernaiz) in the first 33 rounds.

32 of the first 34 picks were collegians.

That has to be intentional, but a little odd to me in how you build layers in your system.  It will force older kids deeper in the system which could lead to an uptick in some performance (more experience versus less experience) and maybe some better Organizational perception based on team competitiveness.

Still seems a little odd that you don't go after as many toolboxes in this type of a draft.

I think they are trying to raise the level of competitiveness in the lower levels while also taking guys with tools that they liked. Laying a foundation that they can build on so to speak. Get players used to being on winning teams.

Building depth. We had a VERY shallow system, and while we are starting to see some flashes of stuff in the lower minors especially, you've gotta have players for them to compete with and hold them back or they move through to fast and don't develop. You want guys moving up because they earned it, not because they are the only good player on a bad team.

I doubt you'll see the same strategy next year, probably some more balance, but it's hard to say. A characteristic of a very metric based team is that they are going to want players they have more data on, and that is college vs hs. Just don't have the data for HS like you have for college level kids. devil you know vs the devil you don't?
