Based on what?

My opinion is that the O's can get much more production with Nunez and additional players than they can with just Manny.

Machado has been worth essentially twice as much (2.5 bWAR to 1.3) as Nunez, and that's with a down offensive year and a third of his time playing out of position for Machado, and a likely career year and unexposed defense from Nunez.

Each additional roster spot you have to use combination to meet Machado's value is one you can't use to add additional value overall.

Well first of all, you can have Núñez and Manny.

Secondly, you are assuming the 29M would be spent wisely.

And lastly, Manny is a 5+ win player. A win is worth around 7-8M as of now. It’s just not right to say we would get that same production. You don’t know that and, when spending in FA, you normally are getting declining years for players, so I wouldn’t count on that anyway.

Rob - fair enough points. But the same declining players thought is likely to apply to Manny down the road as well.

DJMC - I guess the question becomes is Nunez + $29 M in other players better than Manny + whomever fill the same number of roster spots?

Key words...and he is younger, so it will be much longer until he gets there.

One important thing to consider in terms of both is time 'til contention. Machado would have a few essentially wasted years here where it is unlikely that his value OR his cost would matter much. And on the other hand, Nunez is projected to be arbitration-eligible after 2021, right around the time that we would theoretically be trying to start contending again. If he is still producing like this, he'll get expensive REAL quick, so it really isn't a $29m difference.

I guess I am just too management oriented. I totally agree with your "few years wasted here".  And you are probably right in that if Nunez keeps this up for the next two years he will get expensive real quick. But he won't be anywhere near Manny numbers and I hope like heck he does keep putting these numbers up for the next two years!

Just for clarity sake, Nunez came into the season just a few days shy of one full year of service time.  So if he remains in the majors, he'll end up as a Super-2 guy and receive salary arbitration for the 2021 season as well as for the expected seasons of 2022-2024.

Pretty close, but I am guessing Manny did a lot more with the glove than Nunez did this year.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Oh for sure Sean. And I wasn't a fan of keeping Manny for the money he was going to command. But there is no question in my mind that we got more for our money than SD did....by a lot.

For sure I'll take Renato and $29,500,000 a year. Even with the defensive WAR.

I think SD will very much come to regret that contract and look for Boston or NY to bail them out.

I think Nunez will improve marginally each year, for the next few years, but he will always be a streaky hitter.  If he can improve defensively at 3rd then he becomes a player who could stick around until better times.

2 out double in the 1st yesterday was big. Would've been deflating not to score there.
