There is really zero reason to bring up Mountcastle before he has had several months of AAA. We aren't doing anything next year so is makes sense to keep him in the minors and bring him along when he is ready and shown enough at AAA.

Wasn't suggesting having Mountcastle break camp with the Os.Am interested in hearing the defensive evaluations from the ML staff.

Nunez and Wilkerson can hold 3rd until Mountcastle has earned promotion and the Orioles have the additional year of control.

Nunez seems to be growing the more he plays.  I have always though August and September brings the fools gold in player evaluation, but Nunez has been around enough that the opposing teams should have a plan against him.

We bring so many cast offs in, that it stands to reason we are going to have 1 or 2 find a home.  I think Nunez certainly gets his shot in the spring, maybe he can run with it.

 

I have seen Mountcastle a few times.  I really do not think his arm plays at 3B.  JMO.

Bill James ranked the career prospects for the 2018 rookies (top 3 were Acuna, Torres, and Soto, in that order).  Here's Nunez:

 

        27.   Renato Nunez, Orioles third baseman.   Another guy who has bounced around via the waiver wires, but played pretty well for Baltimore and ended the season in possession of a job.  Hit a respectable .258 with 8 homers in 236 at bats, .741 OPS and 103 OPS+.   He hit just .215 in his home park(s), no homers and OPS+ of 62, but hit .295 with 8 homers in road games, 140 OPS+.  The formula says that his Expectation is 57 Major League Win Shares, but intuitively I would put it quite a bit higher than that.  He’s got a job and he’s playing well and he’s only 24 years old; that’s a good foothold, although both Oakland and Texas put him on the waiver wires.  5 Win Shares, 1.3 WAR.

He only ranked guys with 200 PA in 2018, so Nunez is the only Oriole on the list.

Sounds like a situation developing for Renato Nunez, who is out of the lineup again with biceps soreness. Nunez entered camp the favorite at third base, but has been outplayed by Rio Ruiz this spring. "We’d like to see him play a little more, to be honest with you," Hyde said.

He does have ability at the plate, but he is a liability in the field that he has to be a really good hitter to last.

 

The AB in the 8th was a beauty though.  He battled, like crazy, guessed right on a change and just ripped it.

I'd keep him (or keep giving him playing time) over Davis or Trumbo, but not over Mullins, Stewart, Sisco, or Mountcastle whenever it's time to get those guys back up here.

Well Sisco doesn’t impact him.

I don’t think Mullins or Stewart have anymore upside than Nunez.

I think they do.  Similar or better minor league numbers and better defensive value (especially so for Mullins).  None of the trio are especially promising players, so it's not a runaway for the guys I prefer by any stretch.  But I'd stack both Stewart and Mullins above Nunez at this point.  Nunez certainly deserves some credit for having hit a bit since joining the Orioles, but if he can't play 3B I don't think he's got the bat to be an asset anywhere else.

 

Sisco could impact him if he is moved off of catcher and enters the 1B/DH/COF mix.  Personally I'd think about trying 2B with Sisco if he has to shift away from C.

Mullins is nothing.

He’s not even that good in CF however, him being on the team no impact on Nunez because he is in CF and no one else who could play CF is in the way of Nunez.

Stewart could impact him but that’s only if they keep Davis and Trumbull’s around.
