Saw it yesterday with my oldest (she's 7).  This movie has problems many of them, but I liked it more than TFA.  I didn't like TFA, so if Last Jedi wasn't an improvement I was really going to be disappointed.  My biggest reason for liking this one more is that it was more of an original story and not just a rip off of the originals like TFA was.

The yoda reveal was probably my favorite part of the whole movie.  That was something I didn't know about at all so it was a great surprise. I also enjoyed force skyping between Rey and Kylo.

I hated almost all of the comedy bits in this movie,  I guess that was Johnson trying to make this his movie but most of them just seemed out of place.  The bit at the beginning with Poe and General Hux was stupid even worse was Luke tickling Rey (that sounds sketchy) while she tried to reach out.  Damn that just felt so out of place.  Having said that, I thought Hamill was great as Luke although I didn't like his death scene and how that was handled.

The whole casino bit could've been cut and probably would have made for a better shorter movie than what we got.

Obviously the Leia fake death scene was awful and there's no defending it.

In a movie where there were many deaths a more impactful one would have been Finn taking out that cannon (I know that you then couldn't have used Luke the way you wanted in the end if this had happen).  There isn't much for him to do at this point and you finally saw character growth out of him, sacrificing himself for the rebellion would have completed that journey.

The porgs didn't annoy me like I thought they would.

I also didn't have a problem with Rey's parents and I'm fine with who her parents are.

I'm not sure where this is going in the 3rd movie, that's a good thing.  I'm not sure JJ Abrams can deliver but he won't be able to just copy Return of the Jedi.

I liked this just for "force skyping".

I don't think the tickling was out of place. That seems exactly like something Yoda would have done with him on Dagobah.

But is that something Luke would have done?

Didn't love it, but did like it.

Not sure I've ever loved any Star Wars movie. This might be in my Top 3 of Star Wars movies though... Empire, Rogue 1 being the first two.

I don't think the movies are particularly great....   but the Universe they've created, the characters, the light/dark...  that's all so much bigger than any individual story / movie.

Think they did what they needed with Luke. Expect to see him plenty in 9 as the Force Ghost providing training.

Understand the rationale with Snoke.... but I definitely would have appreciated back-story there.  Maybe we will still get that at some point.

Agree with what's been said about Leia.

Agree with the possibility that Rey's parents are still 'someone'... but personally like the story better if they are not.

Do think Luke's self-imposed exile feels off.

I've seen some people saying Hamil should be up for Awards....  ehh, no.  Not that his performance was bad, it just isn't award worthy imo.

This link was pretty good...

So obviously the spoiler thread is taking up most of the posts but would like to hear your reviews and general non spoiler plot thoughts.

Liked it a lot -- not as good as Rogue One or Force Awakens.

Plot is ok, not great, some incredibly cheezy things, including one moment that is so bad it's getting destroyed in the spoiler thread.

Action/battle sequences are amazing and there is an unreal lightsaber fight.

Weekend box office numbers...

North America - $220 million (Force Awakens $248 million)

Globally - $450 million

Roughly 58% of the "The Last Jedi" domestic audience this weekend was male, and 62% of the audience was over the age of 25, according to data shared by the studio.

Disney needs the money to pay for 21st Century Fox bill of $52.4 billion.

It wasn't bad.  Some good parts, some stupid parts.

I agree with Pedro that the lightsaber battle he mentioned is Top 3 (if not the best) of the series.

Yeah I kinda felt the only reason to have her live is to set up a love triangle and have Rey wrestle with jealousy and the dark side messing with her.

I'm not sure Rey has expressed romantic love towards him.  He might just be friendzoned.

SSS but its interesting to me that no one here says they like it more than TFA. The buzz was seemingly that Johnson had made a great Episode and this was going to be universally thought of as better than TFA. Will be interesting to see how I view this one. I thought TFA was a good start to another trilogy but I was hoping this one would build on and ultimately surpass it.

The problem with The Force Awakens for me, is that we've already seen it in A New Hope.

I'll die on The Force Awakens hill.  That movie was so much fun, it was Star Wars was back with likable characters and a good plot (even if it was rehashed).

And Rogue One showed us what 'adult' Star Wars can be and gave us the best droid in the whole damn franchise.

As much as I enjoyed the Last Jedi's highs, and I think the ending was great with where everyone ended up, the journey there just wasn't that spectacular.

I like it way more than TFA, but it's not without its problems. There is a good light sabre fight, not the best though. For me the Obi Wan -Anakin fight is the best duel.

Ugh. The CGI pile of crap when they’re fighting on rocks flying over lava? No thanks.

It just looks bad. It’s used as a “look at this and ignore the shitty plot/dialogue/performances!” tool.

As opposed to cheesy sets we saw in the original trilogy that some dumb dialogue, inconsistent "force plots" and third movie full of stuffed bears fighting?

I mean, we aren't talking academy award films and acting here.

Episode IV was actually nominated for Best Picture because, despite the cheesy sets (which were great at the time) everything else about the film is sublime.

Compare the saber fight in Empire. Takes place in the carbon freezing lair. Slow build up. Choreography. The big reveal. Luke falling.

Then the fight in Sith. Flying around on rocks. Everything going a mile a minute. I guess the “You were the chosen one!” line was ok. But the two aren’t close IMO
