ESPN: Brandon McCarthy recalls incident

http://espn.go.com/m...ents-liner-head

The righty and A's Opening Day starter said he thinks he can begin physical activity in a week or two. McCarthy also said that if the A's make the playoffs, he hopes to be medically cleared to join the team on the road.

Horrible news out of Oakland this morning. Thoughts and prayers with the Neshek family.

@PatNeshek

Please pray for my family. Tonight my wife & I lost our first & only son 23 hours after he was born with no explanation.

San Francisco Chronicle A's refuse to remove tarp, cite 'intimate' fan experience

http://www.sfgate.co...p?cmpid=twitter

On Friday A's management explained to The Chronicle why they would not remove the tarps.
A smaller crowd, A's managers said, would create a closer, more intimate environment for the American League Division Series.
"The fan experience is better without spreading fans out over more seats," A's managers wrote in an e-mail. "The energy in the park and the fan experience over the last week (when the seats were tarped) was incredible."

I'd be pretty mad if the Orioles decided that they were going to not allow people to sit in the Upper Left Field seats for example. I understand why Oakland is doing this, but I think it's wrong during postseason play.

McCarthy made a nice recovery. He's one of the lucky ones. And judging by his column in a recent SI, he's extremely aware of that.

Very interesting article:

http://www.fangraphs...o-head-offense/

It's amazing how the A's have found a new market inefficiency and exploited it in such an aggressive manner: platoon players with positional flexibility. If Derek Norris gets better, they have the potential to go all of next year without starting a single player who has a wRC+ of below 85 against RHP/LHP. How insane is that?

OAK with a sneaky trade, get Jed Lowrie from HOU.

Gives up Chris Carter, Brad Peacock (a big piece in the Gio deal) and C Max Stassi who was pretty highly touted as a prep. Not a bad haul at all.

Oakland has now dealt 2 big pieces from the Gio trade.

Seems like a deal that Houston had to make.

Where's Lowrie play in Oakland? They signed Nakajima to play short, so does Lowrie move to third?

It's all pretty fluid, their 2B and 3B look to be pretty terrible, and Lowrie can play all 3 above average. I'm sure they will play them all and see who looks best, Naka could probably play 2B too if need be.

I figure a lot of it comes down to whether they want to give Donaldson or Weeks/Sizemore another chance, and where Nakajima is most comfortable.

Yeah pretty much. I think they start with Naka, if he's good at SS, then they move Lowrie to 3B, and if Donaldson wows them, they can move him to 2B, if Weeks/Sizemore outplay Donaldson, they go vice versa. They have a ton of moving parts and options, but another scenario is could play Lowrie at SS, Naka at 2B and Donaldson at 3B. I think it's just a matter of who looks most comfortable where like you said, but Lowrie is reallllly adaptable.
