Due to Penn State’s progress in ensuring athletics dept functions with integrity, NCAA immediately restores football postseason eligibility.

Way to slide that one in there today, guys...

Yeah, I wonder if we're going to see a whole gamut of bad news released. PED suspensions, coach firings, etc.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not sure how I feel about this. I thought the punishment was a bit harsh to begin with but at the same time, the NCAA needed to drop the hammer here.

Agreed. Now you can boycott them since you don't have to boycott the Ravens. ;)

Ugh I can't. I just can't. Can I just boycott PSU?

I thought the penalties were arbitrarily harsh, especially since PSU was not granted any due process that schools are guaranteed via NCAA bylaws, but I know they had to act to satisfy the angry mob. So as long as PSU is meeting benchmarks to ensure something like this never happens on its campus or that they cover up such actions when it becomes known, I'm okay with reducing the penalty.

The students have a celebration in the streets where they chant "WE ARE PENN STATE" (that's fine), and they chant..."JOE PATERNO".

They've learned nothing.  They should re-sanction this cult.

Aren't most of "those" students gone, but good to see the next batch hasn't changed.

Well, it was kind of a witch hunt there at first....

Mostly warranted IMO.

Mostly warranted IMO.

Putting everybody who had something to do with it on trial is fine and appropriate.

But taking away an actual history of football games had nothing to do with it.  It's just more BS with a sports league acting like it's the dang justice system.

Well I generally agree with that regardless of the infraction.

Taking away wins is probably the stupidest penalty IMO. Seriously, it sounds like a penalty they should come up with on an episode of Saturday Night Live.

This was never a matter for the NCAA, and I'll always stand by that. Restoring the vacated wins is about as meaningless as erasing them was in the first place. Paterno's legacy as a football coach will always stand regardless of what the record books say. It's his legacy as a man of principle and leader of young men that ought to be viewed with prejudice....and that's why I had no issue, and even agreed with, Penn State's decision to take down the statue.

Apparently a settlement has been reached. Penn State will pay the $60 million fine, which will go towards child-sex-abuse prevention programs in Pennsylvania, and the remaining sanctions have been lifted. Included are the 111 vacated wins for the football program, which also restore Joe Paterno to the status of winningest D-I coach.

From the Deadspin article:

The only takeaway here is that the NCAA continues to be a completely useless organization. The only response it could muster in the aftermath of the Sandusky scandal was to blindly and uselessly swing an axe at Penn State's football program, for no other reason than to justify its own existence. And now, just a few years later, they are just quietly mopping up the mess that they never really had any business making. Nothing the NCAA does ever matters.

Paterno shouldnt have had all those wins taken away. He also shouldn't essentially be excused in all of this mess and allowed to go back to being idolized.

Agreed that vacating wins, unless the violation has a strong correlation to on-field success isn't something that should be done. But since it was, why reverse it? Penn State seems to really be getting off much lighter than the original "drop the hammer" suggested they would. Looking like it was a PR necessity for the NCAA to come down so hard... but once the forgetful society that is America moved on from this mess, they're slowly peeling back a lot of the discipline.

No doubt.
