Its not like he is replacing someone that is good though.  Even through Flaherty's "hot steak" he has a 608 ops.  In the spring Brob looked fine defensively.  I think he will be a good size upgrade.  Even if he hits 50 points below his career of 750.

I'm not counting on much with him offensively or defensively. He's only good size upgrade if he stays healthy long enough and is productive. When in doubt, you usually want the younger player.

I was wrong about him only playing a few games. I like having him hit 9th in the order compared to what was hitting 9th before he got back. Hopefully he continues to prove me wrong.

So, Roberts has returned and is playing everyday. I'm surprised Buck has not given him some rest on day games after night, or just shown some reluctance in using him as much as he has - with 2 other 2nd baseman on the roster.

My eyes tell me Roberts is average ish at 2nd (maybe slightly below)... the defensive metrics hate him.

Closing in on 100 ab's, he is hitting RHP (.286 baa, .739 OPS, 56 ab's), and not hitting LHP (.190 baa, .508 OPS, 42 ab's).
Overall, he needs to get on-base at a higher clip (.283 obp).

He's getting ready to leave the roster on paternity leave for several days.

Not that I think he deserved an opportunity in the first place...but Tony does a good job laying out why Flaherty should be our regular starting 2B.

It's been a little over a month now since Brian Roberts has returned full time to the Orioles lineup so it's a decent time to take a look at his number. Through 27 games, Roberts has put up a .221/.266/.337/.603, has not attempted a stolen base, and has a 6 to 15 K/BB ratio. Defensively he's been worth -0.6 dWar.

Since the 2011 season, Roberts has put up a .220/.268/.309/.576 slash line in his last 359 PAs. In his last 10 games he's hit .219/.235/.250/.485. Although Roberts comeback story is a nice human interest story, it's pretty clear what kind of player is at this point in his career.

In his last nine games before Roberts was activated Ryan Flaherty had hit .452/.485/.839/1.324 and 0.3 dWAR shows he's the better defensive second baseman as well. Flaherty has received only ten plate appearances since Roberts return.

We would've been better off if BRob had never returned to this team IMO.

Flaherty can't hit but his glove does give us more upside defensively.

Tony makes good points....the other side to that is BRob is still basically in his ST mode. I think we have to give him more time but he should DH more as a lefty hitter...he has been awful vs lefties btw, which is part of th problem.

Flaherty is a better defensive 2B than Roberts.  Roberts looks better out there because he knows the mechanics of the position, but he simply cannot get to the batted balls.

I don't understand why he doesn't just spell Hardy and Machado every so often, just so he can "play himself into regression". I mean, the dude's on a hot streak, and Hardy/Machado have played pretty much every day. Give 'em a day off or two for the stretch run.

Machado's trying to break Ripken's streak.

Unless B-Rob plays at a much worse level than Flaherty would, he's not going anywhere. Sentimentality matters.

Flaherty was hitting very well when Roberts took over and had a huge game last night so I'm good with getting him more PT. However, at least against righties, BRob has been hitting well lately too.

So I think they should share time, but I'm not really sure who should play vs lefties. What's Flaherty's splits?

He really hasn't had many chances against lefties, so you can't really see much. But the fact that he DOESN'T play against lefties much, and that he hasn't looked very well in the few PAs he HAS had...makes me think he blows all sorts of chunks against southpaws.

...technical term, blowing all sorts of chunks.

I agree he should be the everyday 2B but he will have to wait until next year unless Roberts gets hurt again.

I think it is less sentimentality and more about him being an established veteran.  Sometimes performance takes a back seat to clubhouse management.

It's highly, let me repeat highly unlikely, but I don't want to say impossible. The truth of the matter is someone like you would be advocating that Ripken needed a break whenever he went into a slump though.

So if he was a 10 year veteran who had played for a few different clubs, he'd be given the same respect? I think not. I do agree to an extent, being an establish veteran has helped his case, but I think his status with the club helps him more. All the talk about B-Rob "deserving" to play meaningful baseball.

Would Flaherty be a better player next season if he got a ton of playing time this season (maybe even including the additional playoff experience)?

Flaherty getting the start tonight.

I don't think that means anything other than he is the backup 2B.
