Getting rid of him for Girardi is a bad decision IMO.

Very interesting team to watch this offseason.

You could argue that health stopped them from winning this year, especially no Baez down the stretch.

I like Girardi quite a bit to be honest, and I think it might be time to move on from Maddon, with respect to what they accomplished together.

There have been some reports of discontent coming out of that clubhouse, and when that stuff starts leaking it's usually for a reason. They are on a three-year downward trend*, and are ending this year by basically collapsing.

It's not his fault, but it's rarely the manager's fault. I think he's out.

Maddon is the greatest manager in Cubs history.

Joe G. wants the job and probably will get it.

Complete agree with both of these thoughts.

Well, that was fast.

If I apply for the job, I'm using you all as a reference.

Had your finger on the pulse on that one Seth.

I find that fascinating. He's a great manager. One of the greats. But they did disappoint since the WS.

Amazing that the Chicago Cubs, who lost for 5000 straight years, pretty much fired their manager who made 3 LCS', made the playoffs in 4 of 5 years, and won a World Championship because they barely missed the playoffs tis season. Man, i guess expectations change!!!

I wonder if the Cubs show any interest in Brandon Hyde? Although I guess they wouldn't want a Maddon disciple after not bringing Maddon back.

Never mind.

I love Hyde, but Maddon is the one guy I'd take over him, and he is willing to coach a loser to the promise land.

Good call Seth!

Thanks.

Really curious how quickly they bring someone in. David Ross, Mark DeRosa (who is outstanding on the network), and Girardi in my opinion should be interviewed right away. I just feel like they'll bring in someone who has ties to the team. Not sure why, just my hunch.

Seems logical for sure.

Unless they want a "fresh" manager like the ones i mentioned above. DeRosa is intriguing to me.

David Ross gets the job. Obviously knows the core players well.

And apparently is going to give one hell of a spring training locker room speech.

Kris Bryant's 2015 service time grievance is scheduled to be heard this week. I don't know how much legal standing he really has, but it's possible an arbitrator could find the Cubs acted in bad faith by manipulating his service time just prior to the beginning of the season. If the grievance succeeds, it would definitely change how teams approach starting the clock on a player's major league career.

I don't expect anything to happen. Perhaps the fact he was called up, thee, day after the deadline goes in his favor. But in these things, if it opens the flood gates for other players to grieve, I doubt they rule in Bryant's favor.

I am in favor of any rule change that starts service time from signing day, not from call up to the bigs day. It's not fair for the fans who have to sit through what the Orioles are doing, not promoting their future stars. It's not fair to guys like Trey Mancini who won't be a free agent until he is 31.

Trey is a bad example because he was not held back at all. He was promoted somewhat aggressively. Several others who came up when Duquette was in charge as well. Not until this year did they really start playing service time games. Unless you go back to when MacPhail was here.

But I agree with the sentiment even though I doubt it'll happen as part of the upcoming CBA. Owners certainly don't want guys having fewer cost-controlled years. I don't know how big and what type of concession the players would have to make to get that. But it'd be ample. I think they'll have other priorities.

I think the closest thing to what you suggest that we'd see is if they increase the number of days you can spend in the minors and still get a full year. Currently it's 20. If they increase that to say 50, then teams have to sacrifice a lot more performance to avoid a guy accruing a full season.
