He couldn't get out of the first inning tonight. 1/3 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 ER, 2 HR.

Any fantasy of Means helping the big team is just a pipedream at this point.

The lack of still load bothers me more than the abysmal results.  I get that they don't want him throwing more than 30 pitches in an inning, and he probably was scheduled to get to about 75 for the game.  But this delays his progression up from 60 at least another 5 days.

I really only care about the performance the final 1 or 2 times out.  I would've guessed this was one of the last two before the early exit.  Now, he'll need at least two more, so he won't be ready to pitch in MLB for at least 2 weeks.  And that's if he can do something approaching 5 innings and 75 pitches with decent results each of the next two times out.

I still expect him to be our 4th best SP this year.  More concern now than a month ago, but not so much concern that I'm panicking and would look to make an external addition now rather than continuing to wait and see.

There was a time where a TJS got sent down to perhaps Low A, and then AA and if necessary, AAA. If the point is to just build up his repertoire to where it needs to be, and repetition is key, then yeah, it sorta makes sense to start in the lower levels.

OK he started three games at AA Bowie and three at AAA Norfolk last year. Got back to the Bigs and despite some positive signs, fizzled out due to fatigue.

I like sending him further south.

Ouch! Good thing Suarez looked good today. He's definitely getting another start now. Means needs more time.

I said as much weeks ago. He hasn't been a factor for over two years. He's more than likely done than helping us in any significant way.

Should have signed another SP.

Absolutelty valid to be concerned about Means. It was concerning when they had to shut him down at the end of last year and started him behind this year. Have no problem expressing concern. Stating as fact that its a pipedream he can help this team this year is a ridiculous statement at this point

Ouch. Results matter at least in regards to building up stamina. Getting pounded and only going 1 inning is bad. No two ways about it.

His fastball velocity was a lot better.

In his previous 3 starts he only hit 92 twice total and was most often 90-91 with even a good chunk under 90. Yesterday he hit 92 on 9 of 18 fastballs, including one over 93 for the first time. Only one pitch under 91.

The optimistic view is that he simply had no command, velocity is coming back but he wasn't used to the increased velocity, maybe as he gets back to normal the command comes back too. He's not going to be very effective sitting at 90ish anyway so velocity increase was a necessary step and it's good that it happened. The pessimistic view...well that's already been said.

There is the reality that some pitchers never fully make it back after TJ surgery. A start like last night has to be very concerning after all he's been through to get back. We were thinking 1 or 2 more minor league starts and maybe he's back in the O's rotation but that's looking like a long shot after last night.

What's crazy is that he was very effective when he returned at the end of last year.

His stats were good but he wasnt striking out anyone and gave up HRs. Some underlying issues. But again, he has some pitchability. He doesnt need to have great stuff to be effective.

Better results for Means yesterday, although still not great - he pitched into the 5th inning, and threw 79 pitches - 4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB and 5 Ks.  He only has time for one more start before his 30-day rehab assignment ends.

30 days is somewhat of an arbitrary deadline.  The team can extend it if Means agrees.  I don't care about production at all early in the rehab but I would like to see him pitch decently deep twice before getting called back. 79 pitches is fine, so that's one, and he did pitch decently.  But gotta do it one more time at a minimum for me.  At this point, I'd prefer to see two more starts out of him before recalling him, but if he can go 85-90 pitches with adequate results next time then maybe you just get him up here.

Can they extend that? I thought that was a CBA thing designed to keep teams from hiding players and avoiding waivers.

The extension to the 30-day limit may end up being moot.  Hopefully Rodriguez is OK, since I think Sunday would be his turn.  They gave him extra rest for yesterday's start, too.  But there's an off day in there, so maybe they're skipping someone else.

Brandon Hyde says the Orioles are discussing whether John Means’ next start comes in Norfolk or for the Orioles. Sunday is TBA re Baltimore’s starter, Hyde said.

Cionel Pérez is also beginning a rehab assignment today, pitching for the Tides

I think Means needs another start in the minors.
