Does anyone ever cringe at some of the lyrics in rap songs?

Sometimes. Depends what the context is...is it really corny? Has it not aged well? Is it vulgar and now it seems offensive when back in the day it was funny?

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Not sure that some of the lyrics would have ever been funny, at least not to me. A few songs on my little Wu binge were just hard to listen to. I think that more so applied to the solo stuff though.

Life After Death -- for being such an acclaimed rap album, and considering how excellent the production was on Ready to Die, the beats outside of Premier and RZA (3 songs total) on LAD are straight WACK!

Liquid Swords, which turns 20 years old on Saturday, went platinum last month.

Happy 20th, Liquid Swords...you're not as good as Cuban Linx but you're still a fucking amazing album.

When I was a kid, I had no idea who Aerosmith was.  I thought it was a fake band that Run DMC made up for the video.

Been listening to every Wu Tang album, group and solo. Just finished Supreme Clientele. Here's my ratings, out of ****

Wu Tang Clan, Enter the Wu-Tang ****
Method Man, Tical ***1/2
Ol' Dirty Bastard, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version ****
Raekwon, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx ****
Genius/GZA, Liquid Swords ****
Ghost face Killah, Ironman ***1/2
Wu Tang Clan, Wu Tang Forever ****
Cappadonna, The Pillage ***
Method Man, Tical 2000: Judgement Day ***
RZA, Bobby Digital in Stereo **
Inspectah Deck, Uncontrollable Substance **1/2
Genius/GZA, Beneath the Surface **1/2
Ol' Dirty Bastard, Ni**a Please ***
U-God, Golden Arms Redemption **1/2
Raekwon, Immobliarity **
Ghostface Killah, Supreme Clientele ****

The Wu really fell off after Wu Tang Forever, but there were still some gems here and there. The run from their debut to Wu Tang forever has to be one of the most dominating runs for a band/group, whatever you want to call them, in music history.

The lesser-MC's who were great when they dropped in on a song, like UGod and Inspectah Deck, had trouble carrying a full album, especially with minimal production from RZA. But it's not like RZA was still bringing it like he had been at that point.

Fun fact, the Inspectah Deck album was supposed to drop in 1995 but there was a flood at RZA's house and they lost all the beats they'd done for the album, and about 300 other beats RZA had on reserve. A hip hop tragedy.

EDIT: Still on this journey if anyone cares...

Wu Tang Clan, The W ***1/2

Ghostface Killah, Bulletproof Wallets ***

RZA, Birth of a Prince **

Raekwon, The Lex Diamond Story **

Anybody watching The Defiant Ones on HBO?  It's a 4-part documentary on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine's musical partnership, which eventually resulted in them making zillions of dollars on Beats headphones.  Tons of stuff on NWA, Interscope, Death Row, etc.  Definitely worth checking out.
