Interesting approach for the Phillies. Again, this in Dombrowski's wheelhouse. Just go buy players. Spending John Middleton's money doesn't really make you that smart, but it is what it is.
I hate the Odubel Herrera signing more than anything, but the rest of the roster is trying to look like a beer-league softball team.
My preference is to extend John Means, but for what the Orioles are more likely doing, the Phillies should (continue to) be one of the top pursuers.

Contract of Mark Appel is being selected by the Phillies.
Left Baseball for 3 years, tried a comeback last year.
First time on a ML roster.
Has kind of a Matt Bush feel to it.

I like this.
Gets Appel off the ignominy of having been one of only three #1 overall picks (excluding Henry Davis, who was only drafted last season and Brady Aiken who didn't sign) to have not at least reached the majors. 1966 Mets #1 pick Steve Chilcott and 1991 Yankees #1 pick Brien Taylor are now the only guys to have never earned a promotion.
Plenty of guys have stunk, but almost everyone eventually reaches.
Another fun quirk...the worst #1 overall pick ever might be Danny Goodwin who was way worse than replacement at -1.7 WAR for his career, the lowest for any #1 pick. He was actually the #1 pick twice! In 1971 the White Sox picked him and he didn't sign. In 1975 the Angels picked him #1 overall again. You could argue that the White Sox had the better outcome.
