There has been some evidence that this procedure of removing the hamate bone saps your power temporarily. I believe this was discussed about Yonder Alonso in the minors. Matt Angle had the hamate bone removed after being injured in spring training or very early in the year 2-3 years ago. Of course, he came back pretty quickly and hit well at Bowie right away. I remember a fair number of players breaking the hamate bone. I'd bet there's a pretty good history of players who've done it.

RZ, I thought the same thing.

On top of that, I know son guys havevhadvwrist/ hand injuries and it has effected their power, like Kotchman.

However, it has also worked out for some. Just have to wait and see with Nick.

I seem to recall there was some speculation that Jay Gibbon's injury (hamate bone, as well) was the cause of the drop in power when he came back.

Nick only had a portion of the bone removed, not the whole thing.

So he can still break it again...

I certainly don't know anything about it, but Britt said on the pre-game show just now that they did a partial removal because it's a quicker recovery time. I wonder if the down side to that is the propensity for breaking it again? Or if the portion remaining isn't a huge injury risk? Just speculating, again, I have no clue about this injury.

Me neither...
