While the team is in St Pete, Nick will see a hand specialist..that according to Roch via twitter:

If you're wondering, Markakis will see hand specialist in Sarasota tomorrow while team is in St. Pete. Not a bad drive. #orioles

Roch said its doubtful he plays tonight...I don't even understand why the word doubtful is being used. If you aren't checking it out today, then he is out...Nothing doubtful about it.

Xrays negative:

orioles official says X-rays on Markakis' right wrist negative but he'll see hand specialist tomorrow in Fla during off day.

Of course, this doesn't show ligament damage.

At least he didn't break the dreaded hamate bone.

With all the constant debate over Nick's potential/expectations/performance, one of the things I think most take for granted is how healthy he has been. I hope this isn't anything serious.

Agreed, I've been one of his harsher critics but it seems he plays 160 games a year. Huge loss if he's out for any extended period of time.

Markakis has only missed 10 total games in the last five seasons. Hopefully nothing serious.

Combine the idea that he is seeing a hand specialist and the way Thorne and Bordy are talking and it sure as hell sounds like Nick is going to be out for a while. If its ligament damage, I doubt we see him until August unless it's minor ligament damage.

Yeah, Bordick had an ominous line during the broadcast last night that made it sound as if the team expects him to be out awhile. It would be a huge dropoff to Flaherty if he becomes the starter. Maybe they'd go back to Avery if Markakis has to miss time.

I hope he's not out long, because while we all kind of take him for granted - he's a valuable player.

Maybe but its not like Avery is any good either. At least he can bring speed and likely better defense than Flaherty but he isn't going to hit.

Any trade possibilities out there for a RF? Not that we have a lot offer to get a decent RFer. Any Roy Oswalts out there for RFers?

Your only hope is that you find some kind of Matt Diaz-esque platoon player. Someone on a poor team making a few million bucks whose team would like to save some salary.

Its still a little early in the trade game to see any big names dealt unless you really overpay for someone and that isn't what this organization needs to be doing.

I had a crazy idea that if Markakis has to miss a lot of time, what about trying Reynolds in RF?

He's not slow, has decent reactions at 3B so I don't think covering a respectable amount of ground would be an issue. He's got a strong enough arm, though accuracy is an issue. Maybe have him start working with Kirby on the side and in a couple weeks if things are going well, give him a shot. Gotta think that of all the positions to convert to, RF may be the easiest.

Obviously it would be a major step down defensively from Nick, but he might be able to do a passable job, and if he starts hitting, it could work out better than Avery or Flaherty and wouldn't need to look outside the organization.

Reynolds should have been playing LF in ST. No idea why the Orioles didn't do that.

I'm guessing they didn't want to distract him too much from getting his 3B issues out of his head (which is where I think they are)... but I really don't know...

Yea, its possible..I think all of his issues are mental as well but still, giving him some time out there wouldn't have hurt him.

With the way guys are moved around in ST all the time, it certainly wouldn't have hurt.

Put it this way...The jays plan on putting Vlad in LF one or 2 games a week according to Thorne last night...If they can put Vlad in the oF, the Orioles can certainly put Reynolds out there.

I would agree with this, and don't think it was a mistake to not be working on getting Reynolds time in the OF during ST. Almost all of his time and focus should have been on working on getting his 3B defense back to an acceptable level. But now that we're in a bit of a bind in the OF and it seems to be almost official that Reynolds at 3B is just not going to work, I think trying to get him up to speed in the outfield would be a smart idea, and one that has a decent likelihood of working out at least marginally well.

From Roch:

Markakis is getting an MRI this morning on his right wrist, and the club should know the results around 3 p.m.

Well, there you go...That's going to be key.

Hopefully nothing is torn because if it is, he is out for 8-12 weeks IIRC.

LOL - completely random, but this made me think of Jim Palmer. He says this all the time whenever someone makes a point cites a stat on the air. I guess since we haven't had him do a game in a while, I'm going through withdrawal.
