LOL - completely random, but this made me think of Jim Palmer. He says this all the time whenever someone makes a point cites a stat on the air. I guess since we haven't had him do a game in a while, I'm going through withdrawal.

That should help with the withdrawal, buddy ;)

From Roch on Twitter:

Markakis broke hammate bone. Surgery tomorrow morning. Not season ending. 3-4 weeks is an estimate

The 3-4 weeks (if estimate holds) is bad, but could be worse. Certainly not the end of the world.

At least he didn't break the dreaded hamate bone.

You jinxing son of a....

Bad news for Markakis and the O's, but at least it's not a longer term injury. I'm skeptical he'll only miss 3-4 weeks after surgery, but I'm no doctor.

We might have the worst hitting outfield in the league for a while. Chavez/Flaherty/Betemit/Avery/Jones?

If Jones keeps mashing, then it will be far from the worst, even with a some combination of the rest of those clowns at the corners.

Chavez isn't a terrible injury fill-in, anyways. You don't want him as Plan A, but he's not a bad guy to have around to start for a few weeks in a pinch. It would be nice if we had a Jon Knott type AAAA guy in the system who could come up and not embarrass himself for a few weeks. I don't really have much confidence in Flaherty. Wouldn't mind seeing Avery back up, although he started to really struggle the week before getting sent down. He looked so comfortable at the plate for the first couple weeks, but started to slip and got sent back down.

Question - excuse my ignorance, but why would a hamate BONE not show up on an xray, but instead on an MRI with only a specialist able to diagnose?

Pretty big dagger here, even if it is only 2-4 weeks. And I would be shocked if it's the low end of that. I'm expecting at least a month.

Rather see a break than torn ligament(s).

Big blow to the team though.

An X-ray doesn't always show a smaller/hairline type fracture.

Apparently, Nick actually injured his hand a week or so ago....but he didn't completely break it until his swing the other day. I guess the team knew this but there was nothing they could do then?

Wily Aybar and Tony Gwynn Jr came back in around 3 weeks.

Britt also said its common it X-rays to not pick up on this injury.

Thanks for all the info. So worse case 8 weeks, best case 3-4. I'll be happy if it's 6, and hope for the best.

So, Nick just had the hamate bone removed.

My question is, does this somehow make him weaker?

My mom is the charge nurse at the Union Memorial hand clinic, which is regarded as the best hand center in the country...Going to have to get her to ask one of the doctors there.

I doubt they would do anything like that if it would cause an obvious and tangible weakness in his game.

Sounds to me more like the hamate bone is essentially worthless, and they can stabilize the hand with a pin or screw or whatever just as well without having to wait for the bone to heal. But then again, I'm not a doctor, I only play one when my girl is feeling frisky.

Pedrioa had his hamate bone removed in 2007, all he did in 2008 was win an MVP award.

Markakis for 2013 MVP!

Tulo also had his removed, no harm done. Poor Pablo Sandoval has had both removed, no hamate bone for him.

According to my mom, this is actually much better thn using a pin or screw. By removing th worthless bone, you just have to allow the soft tissue to heal. She said that it makes sense that he could heal this quickly vs putting in screws/pins. PT should allow him to get strength back in it quickly.
