Interesting. Wonder how aggressively the Braves will pursue additional SP now.

Giolito was good in 19, 20, 21, and this year before being traded.

His baseball savant doesn't look very promising, though.

He's probably not much more than a Dean Kremer mid back end type.

Great trade for the Sox here.

Getting anything for Sale is surprising. But if Atlanta is dealing Grissom, they likely don’t think he’s going to pan out.

From what I've read, he's got upside offensively, but isn't considered good defensively by any metric. He'll fit right in with the Red Sox.

I mean they get 6 years of team control to see what they can figure out with his glove. And bat to an extent too obviously. But Sale is old, has had health issues, and isnt what he was. He wasnt going to make any difference for the Sox anymore. Prob wont for Atl as well

Kind of like Connor Norby. At least now we have some baseline as to what he might fetch in a trade.

I don't think it's a bad deal for Atlanta. Boston is picking up the lion's share of Sale's salary, so he's only costing them $10 million. He'd probably have cost more than that on the free agent market. He also has a $20 million option for 2025 which kicks in if he's in the top 10 in Cy Young voting for 2024 and isn't on the injured list at the end of the season.

His contract also contains $50 million in deferred money. I'm guessing the Red Sox are still on the hook for that. I can't imagine Atlanta agreeing to the trade otherwise.

Deferred money doesn't quite work like that. The Red Sox already owe him all the deferred money except for the portion he would've been due for 2024. I don't know what that number is or if the money Boston paid is towards the in-year or deferred portion of his salary. Could be either depending on the negotiation between Atl and Boston. But the money he deferred from his 2019-2023 salaries will still be paid by Boston.

Grissom's stock has dropped. Sold his 1st bowman auto for $30, only for a year later to see it going for $250. It's now going for $30-$60 bucks again.

Boston needed a SS (leave Story at 2B) or maybe they let it sort out with Grissom playing 2B.

Either way, we knew ATL was looking for a SP and this likely changes the perception of their need.

In a related note, the Reds signed Montas today.  Both teams were proposed destinations for Cease so this might tell a little about the WhiteSox demands (from the other thread).

For the RedSox, I'd guess they move to Montgomery.

2 Teams getting together to solve respective roster issues in reasonable ways

From Cots:

  • $50M is deferred, reducing average annual value to $25.6M (will defer $10M annually in 2020-24, to be paid on 6/30 in 15th year after the salary is earned, 2035-39. If club exercises 2025 option, $5M is deferred until 6/30/2040

I figured Boston would still be on the hook for much of the deferred money since this is the last guaranteed year of Sale's contract. Atlanta received $17 million from Boston in this trade which would fit with reports that they're only picking up $10.5 million of his 2024 salary.

It appears (pending other info) the the Braves are eating the 10M deferred from 2024 so they're only paying Sale 500k in 2024 dollars while the LuxTax hit takes them just over (280M) the 3rd tier threshold of 277M.

His 2026 option contains 5M deferred, so if they like Sale and want him to fill in a year that Fried and Morton may leave/retire, they have an option.

Boston is saving money they were going to pay in 2039, a year beyond Chris Davis' last deferred payment.

Giolito sounds like similar, perhaps worse, boat as Bradish.  Diagnosed with partial tear of UCL, more tests coming.  Just happened so they haven't yet said if surgery is necessary or if they are gonna try PRP and/or rest first like Bradish is attempting.

Giolito has just moved to the top of the list of players most likely to exercise their 2025 player options.

Surgery for Giolito, though not announced if it's Tommy John or internal brace which is slightly less traumatic though still likely a season-ender.

https://www.espn.com...-internal-brace

They ended up doing an internal brace for Giolito instead of UCL replacement (Tommy John).  Still almost certainly will miss the entire year, but should be able to recover fully well before Spring Training 2025. Giolito can opt-in after the season to a new deal that would be $18M in 2025 then a $14M team option for 2026 (which can convert to a player option if he pitches enough innings in 2025).

Is the internal brace a better option than TJS? If it's a quicker turnaround I wonder why most teams are still opting for TJS? Does it depend on the extent of damage to the UCL?

I know only what I've read in articles about Giolito... but yes, it's only a viable option up to a certain severity of UCL injury. A full tear or multiple partial tears requires replacement. But you can brace if it's less severe. Kind of a middle ground between rest & rehab versus TJ.

Article above says players have returned to play in about 9 months. Doesn't say who that was.
