There are only 36 individual seasons since WWII where a player had worse than a 553 OPS.  

 

The Orioles are all over that list, unfortunately.  Billy Ripken's 1988, Mark Belanger's 1968, Chris Davis' 2018, Brooks Robinson's 1975, and Cesar Izturis' 2010 all among the top-30 worst individual offensive seasons (non-adjusted) since WWII.

I still find it fascinating just how bad he got at the end.  It wasn't until the end of 2017 that things really took a bad turn.  He had a 790 OPS in 2016 and then was still at 760 entering September of 2017.  From that point forward he had over 1000 PA with a 553 OPS.

Wasn't it 2017 that they started to sit him more,  I feel like that was when the K's were coming fast and furious and they didn't want him to break the record for most strikeouts in a single season.  I checked the record is 223 K's in 2009 and is held by the one and only Sheriff of Swattingham

I think its more than fair to wonder how much he mailed it in after the new deal.

That sob story from Roch, basically says he didn’t want to be a ball player anymore by 2018. Should have retired then. Still gonna get paid.

Here’s how I’ll tell my kids about him. Here was this guy who was a prodigious power hitter, but struggling, and the Orioles traded for him in hopes they could turn him around. He became a good player in Baltimore contributing to some playoff seasons, our first in a long time. The homers were monsterous at times. The Orioles ended up paying him way too much money after failing to retain some better players the previous years, and the deal represented not wanting to let another good player walk out the door. Won’t fault him for taking the enormous payday. But then he started to struggle again and pretty much gave up. He never tried to get better, figuring he was already paid, why try? He admitted he didn’t want to play ball anymore. But led on the team for three more years before finally retiring. He was a good person, which you should be. And when you have a job to do, you try your best. Which he didn’t. All I ever ask is you try your best.

I'll be shocked if Davis ever puts up one .800 OPS season. Yes, I realize he put up .880 his rookie year in 300 ABs. Talking about a full season here. A lot will certainly depend on how he finishes the season. For now, while I have him down as having a roster spot next year, I'm not handing him a starting gig at any position, even DH.

2013 and 15 were insane. 
So was the Rob Deer end to his career.

Many were right (I certainly wasn't) about big regression coming after the extension. I thought at the worst, he would continue to be what he was in '12. 

 

Ohh well.
