ESPN: 15 Hall of Fame finalists revealed

First-year nominees Derrick Brooks, Tony Dungy, Marvin Harrison and Walter Jones were among the 15 modern-era Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists in voting announced Thursday night.

 

Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan also was selected a modern-era finalist along with defensive end/linebacker Charles Haley, defensive end/linebacker Kevin Greene, receiver Andre Reed, running back Jerome Bettis, receiver/returner Tim Brown, safety John Lynch, guard Will Shields, cornerback/safety Aeneas Williams, kicker Morten Andersen and former San Francisco owner Edward DeBartolo Jr.

Punter Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey were announced as senior nominees in August.

I don't like how 4-6 make it every year regardless of the year. I think the MLB HOF is considered more sacred.

That's because they have their own backlog of candidates. It isn't like they'd let in Clarence Moore just to meet a quota.

 

But their process is even less democratic than the baseball Hall, though it's also more interesting.

I don't mind if they 7 or if they have 3, I just wouldn't do around the same number EVERY YEAR for the sake of doing it.

While football is definitely more popular, ESPN televises the NFL HOF in primetime while pre-MLB Network, the Baseball HOF inductions got relegated to ESPN Classic, I don't think football fans care as much about who gets into Canton versus baseball fans who gets into Cooperstown.

I didn't realize there was even one kicker in the HOFer. Since there is one in, I can live with others being in. But I also think punters should get in.

Can we knock the Tony Dungy for HOF crap off. He rode the GOAT QB to one, I repeat one, SB title.  Has a losing playoff record. Only 1 SB appearance.  Get out of here with this crap.

I agree completely that he doesn't deserve to be in the HOF.

3.9 career YPC. He deserves to wait while other guys go in first. Will Shields, Kevin Greene, and Charles Haley should be ahead of Bettis as holdovers waiting to get in, IMO.

CBS Sports: Tom Coughlin on his HOF chances: 'I think it merits consideration'

 

He took over the expansion Jaguars in 1995, and within two years, he led them to a 9-7 mark and an appearance in the AFC title game. From 1996-99, Jacksonville went 45-19 with four-straight postseason appearances. But after suffering three-straight losing seasons, Coughlin was fired after the 2002 season.

 

He was hired by the Giants a year later, and since then, he's managed a winning percentage of .563 with those two Super Bowl wins for New York.

I just wanted to take the time to write a few thoughts before tonight's induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of fame. First off this is such a first class group of people, not just great football players. Derrick Brooks in paticular was always one of my favorites. He is an example of how important hard work and toughness is. Michael Strahan is one of the warmest personalities the game has ever known. Andre Reed is the ultimate professional. Ray Guy has waited 22 years for his gamechanging punting style to be rewarded with a yellow jacket. I could go on and on about how much I admire this induction class. I just wanted to point out however that this year's class is not only filled with tremendous football players but tremendous people who embody what this game is all about.

It was hard not to like the Bills. I was a Niners fan before the Ravens came here, so it was easy to root for Buffalo in their Super Bowls since I couldn't stand the Redskins and Cowboys.

I also for whatever reason always played as the Bills on Sega Genesis Joe Montana Football 93'.They didnt have players names or ability levels yet like Madden does, but each team had their own playbook. I could score at will with about three different plays. If they had names, Im sure Andre Reed scored about 10 TDs a game for me.

Derrick Brooks was one of my all time favorites. That Bucs defense was amazing. He was the leader. Looking forward to seeing the big man in his big moment. Growing up a Ravens fan you dream of being a linebacker not a QB or a WR. I idolized Brooks.

I took scrupulous notes so I could really capture the moments. I hope that you enjoy the article as much as I enjoyed writing it. Last night was pretty special. I thought theme of the speeches was humility and love for family. It is refreshing to hear. We also got to relive some great memories if football.
