And yes.
Well, he had it in May, so he's still recovering and may not be ready when the season starts.

Nothing earth shattering to add here, but I really like the signing. As noted, he did drop 2 MPH from 2012 to 2013, but his velocity in 2011 was lower than in 2012...if that makes sense.
Sinkerball type, groundball pitcher. He should play well at the back of the bullpen. The thing with relievers is they are so inconsistent so I like the relatively low money and the fact that a groundball guy is a bit more consistent. They don't usually have the home run spikes.
Even with less than spectacular stuff, he does get swings and misses with pitches in the strike zone at at a 13% rate, which is right on the league average.
Nice value for what they chose to spend.

Give me a sec........Let me find out if it's Weber or Rob who is way off.
Posted 11 December 2013 - 10:42 PM
Why? He was in the NL and his peripherals suggest he will see an increase in ERA.
I agree with Chris that I like the IP...But the bottom line is he is a dime a dozen, mediocre reliever...One that can be good one year and below average the next.
His velocity saw a drop.
You don't pay for mediocrity...You can always find that for no money....Webb was just NT and the Orioles rushed to get him. Why? Were you afraid someone else would sign him? Didn't you have 10 other names on your list?
Its just a very poor use of funds and generally goes to how the Orioles operate.

Velocity drop isn't necessarily a bad thing with sinkerballers.

I think Matusz deserves a shot. Seems silly to be using him in the pen when he has 3-4 solid pitches. If he can be a MOTR starter, $2.5M is pretty darn cheap to pay for one.
Reminds me of all the talk about making Jim Johnson a starter . Matusz hasn't done enough as more than a LOGGY to justify trying to get him through 6-7 innings on a routine basis. If it works great, but I sure as hell am not counting on it.

I like how Webb is being accessible with the fans. For all the talk about players shouldn't be on social media, he's becoming really likeable by doing that Q&A question. Won't do much good if he can't perform on the field though.

I was at the game so couldn't see much in terms of the movement on his pitches, but he wasn't hit hard. Three pitch K, two clean singles, a weak ground ball that should've been an out turned into an error, and a misplayed comebacker that would've been a DP turned into a FC.
Nothing was particularly hard hit. Results obviously were bad, but I don't think he was really all that terrible. Certainly no reason to think he's going to suck if you didn't before, but if he was really good, he probably doesn't get non-tendered and then sign a deal for $2.25M a year.

Like I said, Ayala of '12. Hes the 2nd tier, 6th inning guy.
Posted 02 August 2014 - 08:52 AM
But as far as those go he's pretty good right? I'd rather have him out there then 2012 Ayala. With the back end of our bullpen he's fine in that role.Like I said, Ayala of '12. Hes the 2nd tier, 6th inning guy.
