5/$125M extension for Altuve, who was due to be a FA after the season.  $15M bonus then $30M for each of the next 3 years then $10M for the final 2.  He isn't young, but he hasn't slowed down at all.  This deal starts at Age 35, so its a gamble, but Houston has tons of cash and by adding the two cheap years on the end it reduces the luxury tax implications.

Altuve just feels like a guy whos still gonna be hitting well at 38 yrs old. D prob falls off quite a bit though

2B is a pretty good spot to hide someone with diminishing range.  Can also DH him quite a bit by the later years, assuming the bat holds up to some level.

A seemingly rare example of a Boras client signing an extension without testing free agency.  A different scenario given his age, but still, some timely hope for inking any of our Boras clients.

Bat has always been great, defense not so much and falling. Obviously 2B isn't a premium defensive position. Also has had some issues staying on the field the last few years.

Altuve was probably worth more to the Astros than any other team, thus the big extension.

They've got some key pieces approaching free agency (Bregman, 2025, Boras client) and Kyle Tucker (2026). Probably going to cost way more to keep either of them in the fold.

This is my take on Altuve also. The Astros are thinking about adding a 3rd player to Cooperstown, and they want him to be a career Astro. No one else would have given him that contract.

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Snell would be a good fit for a team with Houston's bullpen.

It would also make sense in terms of draft compensation. Since Houston already surrendered its second-and fourth-highest selections for 2024 to sign Josh Hader, they'd only have to give up their next-highest pick--a third--plus their sixth-highest pick if they were to sign Snell. Not the best circumstance for a team whose farm system certainly needs restocking, but signing two qualified free agents in the same offseason does have its advantages.

They have an owner who recently said "The window is never closing". They will cross the luxury tax threshold this season (by less than $2M) but if they add Snell, and resign Bregman, they'll soon find themselves donating mentionable money to the rest of the league. And then Kyle Tucker will come calling, in a couple of years. The fans are clambering for the team lock him down for the long term.

Good news! I saw a dog today.
