Clearly I've been asleep at the table because how the hell are Aston Villa in third?

0-0 snoozefest at Anfield yesterday.

Aston Villa is quietly building a pretty strong club. They have won more EPL matches in calendar year 2023 than any year in their history. Sitting tied for 2nd in the EPL and only a single point behind Man C. Not bad for a team with the #7 payroll.

I am rooting for Aston Villa just to upset the apple cart and put a new face in the crowd.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note
"Now OPS sucks. Got it."
"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."
"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Mid season review. Thoughts?
A thorough write up! I think City should still be the favorites to win it all, especially with De Bruyne returning from injury and losing no one for continental tournaments. If Liverpool can continue their form without Salah and Endo for a period they have a real shot to win it all.
My head says
City
Liverpool
Arsenal
Villa
My heart says
Liverpool
City
Arsenal
Tottenham
Two small errors I noticed in your Man U writeup, Galatasaray is Turkish, not Greek, and FC Copenhagen plays in the Danish Superleague not the Netherlands.
Curious to hear your thoughts on Ten Haag, he's been really unimpressive this year even outside of roster and ownership issues IMO, but I also don't see any value in paying him off early and getting an interim caretaker manager. I think they should see the year out, give the new ownership time to do a top to bottom evaluation before continuing the Man U coaching carousel.

Mashed thanks for the corrections.
As to ten Hag. I think he's a good coach. I think Man U has not done well with their money. I think the players are not performing. But at the end of the day, like in all sports, its the manager who gets the brunt of the blame. If they don't turn it around in the next several matches I think they have to move on.

Arsenal close to signing Karim Benzema. Guy may be getting up there in age but he's still a solid attacking option.
As to Klopp leaving Liverpool. I think the next obvious step for him is to take on a high end national team. Much less daily grind than being the manager of a club.

Not EPL exactly but FA Cup 4th round this week with most games this weekend.
Watched the Ipswich Town - Maidstone match. Maid who? Well Maid how pulled off the upset on the road besting Ipswich 2-1.
Check out these stats:
Shots: Ipswich led 38-2
Shots on goal: Ipswich led 13-2
Corners: Ipswich led 11-0
Possession: Led 79 to 21%
Pass Accuracy: Ipswich led 87% to 49% (49% is just dreadful)
Ipswhich is in the Championship (level right below the EPL).
Maidstone is in the 6h level and is a semi-pro team.
So this would be like a team from one of the independent baseball leagues beating a AAA team (and actually this is a bigger upset than that)
Damn I love this game!!!

I saw someone on Twitter compare it to a D-III college you’ve never heard of beating James Madison, who just moved up from FCS to FBS in football.

Agreed, though he said he won't catch at all next season.
Hopefully we can get Xabi to take over.

Sounds like it's official Reyna on loan to Forest for the remainder of the season.
