Frankly, he always came across as an elitist, blue-blood snob. Teams from the SEC, Big Ten or ACC who struggled to reach .500 all season deserved a tourney nod over mid major conference champion winners like a Valparaiso, Davidson or even a Gonzaga. To me, he became unlistenable around the mid 90s. Raftery was a much better ‘get’ to provide the in-game commentary. Apparently Packer stopped following CBB altogether and instead spent his time watching ultimate fighting and kickboxing.

There was a time where Billy and Dickie V did games together.  AT times they could be more entertaining than the game.

One of his more infamous gripes was in 2006, I think. The CAA got several teams in the dance, which he thought was an injustice to the middling power conference teams. Then George Mason made it to the Final Four.

 

As he liked to say, he was "often wrong, but never in doubt."
