On close ball 4s where the player goes to 1st without a call from the home ump, 95% of the time the ump seems to call a strike.

Yep. Everytime, they take it as the batter trying to tell him what the pitch is when he's still thinking about it.

On a close ball 4 your best bet is just to stare at him and let him make up his own mind.

I've always thought it was a factor. Many umps probably take it as showing up their authority.

Ok, so I'm not the only one.

Davis lines into right, loads the bases with 1 out.

Fife isn't going to last 4 innings.

Stephen Fife? I think the Dodgers would rather have Barney Fife on the mound today.

Markakis has been doing a pretty poor job on the bases. The 9th inning of the Rays game he only goes from 2nd to 3rd on a ball off the wall. There was no chance of the Davis liner there being caught. Why did he hold up? Not reading the ball well? He's usually one of the most fundamentally sound guys year in and year out.

Didn't realize we were never walked off last year. I mean, I know there's the 7th inning + streak they have, but that's still surprising.

I saw in the replay that the third base coach held him up on the Rays wallshot.

I saw that too. But he scrambled back a few steps toward 2nd once the ball hit the wall, like he thought it was caught. That hiccup could have been why he was held up. Not a huge deal given the 0 out situation.

Quick, efficient inning for Jake.
