As is typical for me I liked Roberts because he was higher risk, higher reward for me. Hairston was safe & subsequently boring.
Ultimately, I think the O's made the right choice, but Hairston's durability & positional versatility are nothing to scoff at.
There was some consideration at the time of using Roberts at SS (had played there in College)... but didn't have the arm for it... plus Tejada happened...
Jerry had some pop when he came up... was shooting the gaps, hitting a few bombs. Might have changed his approach some and start looking to drive a bit too much. Obviously he wasn't Alomar, and I don't think the defensive metrics ever loved him; but he covered a lot of ground at 2nd in his early years.
Good for him for lasting.
