I'm highly skeptical of their position truly being "start with Holliday."The white Sox went from "start with Holliday or it's a non-starter," to taking a prospect package far worse than what the O's offered for Burnes, all in a matter of weeks.
What a terribly run org. Jeez.

San Diego package was better than what we gave up for Burnes. Granted, Cease has that extra year of control.
Ortiz is a better headliner, IMO. Probably take Hall over the RP. The other two prospects are a good bit more valuable than the comp pick so think overall the Padres offer was stronger. I don't think it's a big difference though, especially depending on your evaluation of Hall who is probably the most volatile piece in either deal.

Jackson Merrill made the Padres opening day roster and is playing CF in today's game in Korea.

According to Sarah Langs, he's the 4th youngest CF to start on opening day in the divisional era. Griffey Jr. is #1 and #2 on the list.

The Orioles are already preparing their WOW offer for 2030.

Dude is letting the fans at San Diego Sports and Life hear about this mistake
I have a longer response and was going to include this in some other discussion. I'm guessing you just wanted to do your Wile E. thing and aren't actually interested in the response.
I will say this....are you sure you want to use the Padres the standard for the "smart thing to do"??

Somehow, all these other teams are able to lock up their young studs.

Not all. Depends on the stud's desires and risk tolerance, which is often reflected on their choice of agent.
Somehow, all these other teams are able to lock up their young studs.
But not all our players are Boras clients, so have to think part of the lack of signings is because of Elias' risk-aversion. Rutschman in particular we should've signed before he even made his debut. Think after 2023 the ship had sailed on a potential extension for him and while there isn't any evidence, I assume it was entirely Elias who let the opportunity pass.

They're not Boras clients.
