The MLB should just adopt the NFL draft model. Have 7 rounds, then call it a day. It's a joke after that.

A team drafted Johnny Manziel. If im the Padres scouting director and I put all this work into scouting guys, and they say "efff it. Manziel for S*** and giggles." I would ask. " why the hell am I here?" I cant take the
MLB draft seriously until they condense it a lot and allow draft pick trading.

Teams need to fill out their minor league rosters. It could pretty easily drop down to 30 rounds, though. Maybe 25.

Now were just talking semantics. Fine two days. However many rounds that is. But at the point where the Rockies are taking Peyton Manning Jr. And the Marlins are taking LeBron James' brother, and even my phone is ringing, enough is enough.

Who cares if the Astros or Yankees want to sign Willie Mays III? He wont ever make the majors and minor league ball is pointless except for the trying to get better to earn a call up part. For every Mike Piazza there's a billion joe schmose who never get out of Bluefield.

The Yankees could buy all the B players they want and win every A ball title and no one would care because those guys will never see a major league diamond.

 

If a player isn't drafted he is open to be signed as a free agent. So what about all of the quality HS kids that aren't interested in pro ball yet? I think making those kids FA would open up the door to Red Sox/Yankees/Dodgers grabbing those high ceiling kids with signability issues. I guess you could get around it by forcing kids to declare, and if they declare and are not drafted then they as high schoolers can't sign with anyone?

You think it will drop down more eventually? If so, would it hurt scouts like what is being talked about with an international draft?

It wouldn't hurt scouts. It would be fine. International draft the issue is diluting the importance of relationship building and searching out talents. US you still need boots on the ground getting up-to-date looks considering the geographic area that needs to be covered.

You could have a 15 round draft (most of the quality HS kids are gone by then anyway) and make it that any money spent over $25k to sign an undrafted HS/College prospect counts against a teams cap.

 

But I don't think it really matters if the draft is 40, 50 or 100 rounds long.

At some point it gets ridiculous but I don't think 40 is that bad. I would like to see less of these ceremonial picks in both directions (celebs/nepotism). Good PR, but I don't like making a mockery of it.
