Roch is just a MASN shill. He's not even a real journalist anymore. Sad part for Roch is, he's literally the Orioles official beat writer yet they never even feed him a breaking story every now and then.

Yeah it's amusing that a national guy always breaks O's trades or signings. Elias can't throw the company man a bone once in a while?

Lol that’s hilarious coming from Roch. The correct answer for him is: “I just write whatever Elias or Rubenstein asks me to write. To get a correct answer on this question, you’d have to ask a real journalist.”

No shade towards Roch, it is what it is, but who in their right mind would ask him of all people a question like this given his employer?

My guess is it was a planted question at the behest of said overlords.

That's because that news is first leaked by the agent or player, not someone with the O's, and I would not be surprised if Roch/Melewski are told by their bosses they are not to publish anything from sources outside the organization.

Doesn't change the fact that they can't toss the poor guy a bone every once in a while with an inside scoop. He does enough shilling for the organization to earn that from time to time.

If it bothered him that much, I'm sure someone with his extensive resume could find work at another outlet where he'd have more latitude on what he reports. I imagine MASN pays him well, at least relative to what others in his profession earn.

Roch is an awesome human just trying to make a living doing something he loves.

These conditions aren’t his fault. It’s not like he’s obeying Hitler. It’s sports. I’m sure if he had his way, just like us, he’d prefer these dynamics were different. It is what it is.

There are hardly any sports “journalists” nationwide who do journalism anymore.

Anything Elias ever said about John Angelos being willing to spend money on major league talent was total, pure, utter bullchit. It was a nonstop salary and expense cutting effort to pocket more profits and clean the slate for the next owner. Major league won loss record never ever mattered one iota to John Angelos. Zero.

Elias' background, and ability to work in and still have success in that environment was a perfect and all-luck match. But John never EVER wanted to spend more in an effort to win more. Once dad (or power of attorney) relinquished the reigns to John, it was full speed ahead on profit maximization.

fwiw, I still non-concur with your assessment of the situation.  John would have had no issues spending money if he could get MLB to transition the Team to him.

We all should send MLB a Christmas Card.

They are a dying breed, to be sure. Not really their fault, they had to adapt to the landscape around them. The Athletic tried to keep sports journalism alive, but their hubris came back to bite them and now there are probably fewer than half the writers left from the early days who still have a local focus.

Sports journalists have now taken to flying drones over the sensitive facilities in New Jersey.

Roch has got to have the lowest work ethic of any mainstream journalist I've ever seen. My favorite is when he not only posts word for word what he's been handed without doing any writing of his own, but just tweets a screenshot of it without even typing it up.

Why waste the energy? It's not like any of us are going to think, "This is typed up, this must be critical journalism" :D

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Don't get me started on the media's use of <fill in social media app> screenshots to fill an article, while using it as an example of "public reaction" to something.  The movie Idiocracy becomes more documentary than farce by the year.

MASN "media" is nothing more than a PR and marketing arm for the team. Which is fine, I don't expect them to be overly critical of themselves. But everything they post (like every team owned and/or influenced outlet) should be taken with a grain of salt. Opinions will be skewed and biased in their favor. Aside from some extra behind the scenes video for entertainment purposes, and basic factual news like player moves, not much else worth seeing there.

If folks wanna make a paycheck with access and stenography, hey, I get it, that sounds like a sweet gig. It only rubs me the wrong way when they get defensive and pretend like they're still committing acts of journalism.

I read an article that quoted Joel Wolfe (Sasaki's agent). He said how a mid to small market team better suits Sasaki's personality. He wants to go to a team that is known to work well with pitchers, and is ready to compete now. It's unknown if he wants to be the star of the rotation, or if he would rather be in the shadows of the star(s). Baltimore was not mentioned as a possible destination for him.
