Burnes not pitching this game and then being able to pitch against the Yankees is so frustrating. Not sure if that's Elias or Hyde, but the duo has made a very bad choice.

Incredibly frustrating. All you had to do was swap the two. 1 extra day off for Kremer gets you an extra Burnes start against the Yanks. Makes no sense. None. I really do wonder if this was Burnes and Boras wanting to assure that Burnes throws in the AS game. If he throws on Sunday he would not have thrown in the AS game.

Incredibly frustrating. You could've pitched Kremer tomorrow and pushed everyone else back a day and instead skipped Povich or Suarez if you wanted to get Kremer work. Makes no sense. None. It wouldn't have mattered much. Our offense sucked tonight. I'm glad we didn't waste Burnes tonight and have him for tomorrow. I'll take my chances with him and more than 2 runs.

Wouldn't have wasted Burnes even if the offense can't score.  First off, it's possible he makes 2 stand up.  Secondly, it allows him to start again on Sunday.  The timing of Burnes' first start is this week is pretty irrelevant.  The existence or lack of a second start is the huge variable.

He could've started yesterday, Sunday, and the first game after the break.  Now, he'll start only on Tuesday and the first game after the break (maybe).

The more I think about it the more annoyed I get. I wish the damn media would ask Hyde questions like this. He might drop a basic we wanted to keep everyone on schedule but at least make him answer a question about it.

I get all of that. I was just talking about this one game and how bad the offense was. I'll take my chances that we score more than 2 runs tonight and that Burnes doesn't have to pitch a shutout.

Game flow is completely different with Burnes on the mound. The offense wasnt destined to only score 2 runs. IN the universe where Burnes pitched last night  the boxscore doesnt look the same as it did with Kremer on the mound.

Even if the offense still only scores 2 in regulation, Burnes has allowed 0 or 1 in 8 of 18 starts and allowed 2 in another 5 starts. Bullpen could've have a shot to win the game or allow the offense a shot in extras.

But again, only getting one start this week from Burnes is the problem. Not the timing of the first start. Hard to defend this decision, IMO.

We can only judge this in hindsight but when the Cubs switched their rotation around I was glad that the O's didn't and that Burnes would be facing their best starter in Imanaga. Hopefully he gets some run support and we don't waste a quality start by him. That was a possibility yesterday with the way the offense performed.

Taillon is better than Imanaga, IMO.

They got bad Kremer and when he shows up, it's probably going to be a loss.  Get the next two and on to the Yankees.

I don't care much about the pitching matchups. This is a freaking pennant race. Not giving Burnes two starts this week is a huge tactical error IMO especially since the start he won't get is against the team right behind us in the standings.

Come this winter when FA talks are going on is Burnes going to give the O's a discount because they were nice to him and set it up so he could start the AS game?

It's a pennant race, I guess, except that MLB has more or less made the regular season meaningless.  Keeping Burnes fresh for the playoffs is way, way more important than winning the AL East.

There's a lot of reasons that a pitcher could be pushed back a day. I'd be annoyed if the reason was entirely the AS game, and unless they say otherwise we can guess that probably was at least part of it, but unless they come out and tell us we'll never really know.

Keeping Burnes fresh for the playoffs is certainly a consideration. I don't think skipping a key division start in early July has anything to do with that nor does it actually accomplish anything toward "keeping him fresh" for the playoffs.

I see what you're saying, but in 2024 no division start is "key".  You just need to make the playoffs - MLB has made winning your division pretty meaningless (unless you like flags).

I really disagree that winning your division is "pretty meaningless"!!!

You are right, Winning a division over a long season is never meaningless.

Getting the bye is very meaningful and you have to win the division for that. If you win without the bye it's probably also useful to be home for the wild card round.

It goes much beyond that. Winning the division has playoff benefits.
