I listened to the game one SirriusXM on the way home from fishing. Its was the Yankees broadcast and I actually though they did a pretty good job. Gave the O's a ton of credit and talked about how strong their offense is.

But to me the telling comment was about the 3rd or so inning. Irvin just walked another guy and the female commentator said "this is what will be the downfall of the O's season. They just don't have good enough pitching. Yes I know the stats but its deeper than that. How can you have a 7 run lead and then walk the leadoff batter."

She wasn't wrong. Its gets overlooked because we just spanked their asses yesterday but take aside the offense for a minute. Irvin allowed 5 runs in less than 5 innings. That ain't going to cut it most times out.

He's been pretty solid this year so I'll cut him some slack about yesterday's start.  The thing with Irvin is, he doesn't have overpowering stuff and needs to work both sides of the plate with command.  Gil of course has superior stuff compared to Irvin, but both of them were struggling to throw strikes.  It happens and Burnes will get roughed up at some point too.  The season is just too long for it not to happen.  Let's see what Irvin does in his next start.

There are lots of things that can go wrong in October. If they stay healthy, Burnes and Rodriguez could carry the staff if they get on a heater at the right time. That's the dice-roll aspect to playoff sports.

But what festers most for me is the fear of the bats going cold. 96/97. 2012/14/16 always felt like their biggest bats would disappear in clutch situations come playoff time at some point. They never maintained production. And any time an offense relies heavily on HRs, which I know is a lot of MLB in general these days, it seems like it can spiral down fast. A few flies die at the track that would have been over in July or August. Suddenly you're trailing late in game one and guys start pressing. Snowballs from there...

Gunnar, Adley, Tony and a couple others will need to be October versions of their June selves.

The Yankees hitters definitely deserve a lot of credit for working counts.  But all three starters in this series struggled to throw strikes.

Still floating after the last two games.

After yesterday’s Bloodbath in the Bronx ™️, Baltimore now has the highest run differential in baseball.

Even Burnes, perennial Cy Young candidate, allowed 5 or more runs in 5 or fewer innings three times last year and twice in each of 2021 and 2022. Over 7% of his starts in that time. One can say that doesn’t cut it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen with every pitcher. Irvin is a #4-6 type starter precisely because he does that more often.

It was also a hot summer day in the Bronx. Yankees hit some cheapo’s off him. Irvin has been fantastic. No, I don’t expect him to continue to be as our #5 starter. The Yankees broadcaster was just trying to make herself feel better about the fact that the Orioles own their ass.

What was Pedro saying?

First he called Gunner an underrated player as if he was somehow overachieving. How can the reigning rookie of the year who's looked at as a potential MVP candidate be underrated? Gunner is well known and respected in baseball circles.

He then said that the O's would be looking at the Yankees this series and figuring out how can we beat these guys as if we weren't on their level yet. I don't think he's been paying attention to what we've been doing to our entire division the last year and a half. It was blatantly obvious in this series that even though they're in first place we're in their heads and not the other way around.

I just thought both takes were lazy journalism.

In baseball circles sure. I think random baseball fans maybe know he’s good but don’t know he’s a superstar yet so I could see calling him underrated in that sense. If the best case scenario happens, he finishes off the year on the same pace with approximately 50 HR and 11 WAR and the team is on national TV for much of October he’s going to be more of a household name.

The latter point I agree with you.

He's probably just confused that not everyone thinks of the Yankees as their daddy.

Right.

The story on Gunnar is still, “here’s the name you need to know, now” when instead it really should be what the other 29 teams in MLB are muttering to themselves…”We passed on him.”

The national baseball media is as lazy as it gets.  If they had their way, MLB would just be like 6 teams.

They just can't wrap their heads around the fact that it's not the Yankees/Red Sox fighting for the AL.

The Orioles have lost Bradish, Wells, Means, Kremer, Coulombe, and from last year Felix, so yeah, she is right, we need more pitching. but what we have is a great lineup that just battered their high $$$ pitching staff.  I think what Susan Waldman should worry about is the weak 5-9 in the Yankee lineup.  That may be their downfall.

The Yanks will make trade to upgrade their offense. Who is an overpriced veteran on a losing team somewhere who sucks but will go to NYY and have a couple of good months? Anthony Rendon?

If Toronto starts their rebuild a year early, the Yankees will be all over them. And the MFY need a 1B...

Even the Yankees aren't dumb enough to take that contract.

I'd pitch in my share to see him get shredded by the media and fans. Always injured, "baseball isn't important to me, just a job, etc." Make it happen, please!

Yeah, I'm gonna call into their pre game show, call her out on Irvin and finish by telling her to make me a sandwich.
