Well, so much for no more additional departures…
Jamie Kaiser, Jr. has entered the transfer portal.
Good grief.
Like with Lamothe, nobody is offering Kaiser a bunch of money.
So, he's a Top 100 guy you recruited.
He wanted to be a Terp.
He plays 20 minutes a game, shooting 27% from the floor... and he wants to bail.
At worst, he was going be the 6th man, and get a lot of minutes.
Yes, for the record.... totally on-board with the player getting to go where he wants.
And comfortable with the idea that maybe he didn't like his experience at MD, didn't like the coaches, etc... wants a fresh start.
That's his right.
But if he wants to leave because MD has brought in two guards, and he will have to compete with them and Harris-Smith for time.... that's just weak imo.
I can't imagine having a season where I shot 27% from the field (as a shooter); and the coaching staff clearly believes in me (see the time I got all year)... and be like, "Nope, taking my talents elsewhere."
For me, it feels like a lack of desire to compete.
You had Queen coming in, Reese back, had added two quality guards.
Beyond personal improvement, I'd be thinking about, "Man this year didn't go great Next year could be better. I'd like to be a part of that."
I do acknowledge that might be completely unfair.
Maybe he had bad breakup.
Maybe he wants to live at home (Burke, VA is 50 minutes from College Park).
Maybe he wants to go down a level, and put up 20 shots a game.
Whatever. He's certainly entitled to do what is best for him.

Kaiser had an opportunity to become a solid contributor next season.
The portal has made it too easy for kids to transfer on a whim. What has happened to working hard, earning your spot, developing into a player that contributes?
Hopefully he doesn't turn into a "Wahab", transferring every time things aren't perfect for you.
Good luck to him!

That's become the story of basically all levels of all sports now... down to 10U travel kids. Different jersey every year. Sometimes 2, 3, or 4 different teams in the course of 1 year. Always finding some reason that grass is greener elsewhere and never showing any resilience if things aren't exactly how they (or more accurately the parents) want them to be. It's a lot of madness, and not good for the mature development of a young adult.

Agree with a lot of this but I can certainly envision a scenario where he had a conversation that indicated he might not be getting the playing time he was hoping for next year. Like maybe Willard said, "We brought you in as a shooter but you can't shoot." Or something along those lines. But nicer.
He'll be an interesting one to follow to see where he ends up.

I'd like a athletic wing with a scoring history. Ideally someone that has shown an ability to shoot.
Add that and I'll be pretty excited about next year.

Former Maryland players Ian Martinez (Utah State) and Chol Marial (Oregon State) are both back in the transfer portal.
This new team every year shuffle is a joke...

I thought players were allowed only 1 undergrad transfer and 1 grad transfer without sitting out a year? Why does it feel like some players are transferring more than this?

Restrictions (i.e. sit out a year) for second or more undergrad transfers are currently suspended until the end of the spring season. A court said the rule that you had to sit out was an anti-trust violation, so the NCAA lifted the restrictions for the time being and players can transfer without sitting out even if it's their 2nd or 3rd time.I thought players were allowed only 1 undergrad transfer and 1 grad transfer without sitting out a year? The court is right, so eventually that rule will disappear entirely.
