I was surprised to see Gilaspie up in the pen.  Why not use Irvin and let him eat innings.

 

Because Irvin as a SP probably couldn't get ready fast enough to enter and put out a rally.

An interesting aspect of earned vs unearned runs is when the pitcher is the one making the errors. That inning was all on him, but he got a pass on 2 runs as far as his Earned Run Average.

Totally. Been saying for years that when a pitcher makes the error the runs should be earned.
