Forbes released their college rankings. MD came in at 34 (13 among public)

NW Michigan and Illinois only BIG 10 ranked higher (USC UCLA and UW are also higher)

Question. Maryland has clearly raised in academic stature since my dumb ass went there. Would this begin to hinder recruiting raising admission standards? Everyone talks about Notre Dame and their academic standards but Maryland is actually ranked higher.

Just figured this would make for an interesting discussion

I think the overall standards for admission of the general student body only really affect recruiting if the football team doesn't get enough exceptions as it wants to get enough guys who qualify based on NCAA standards but fall short of Maryland standards.

I don't know how many exceptions the university allows for each sport, or if those exceptions are blanket or conditional (i.e. we'll allow <1000 SAT scores but not <900 when 800 is the NCAA threshold and other schools might let those scores in as exceptions...all numbers in that example are made up).

Former Maryland OC Dan Enos has been fired by Arkansas after just eight games as their play-caller.

The Diamondback: Maryland football assistant coach Kevin Sumlin arrested on DUI charges

https://dbknews.com/...in-dui-florida/

Maryland football co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning in Florida, according to a Hillsborough County police report.

Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, which results in a license suspension for at least one year, according to the report. He pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment. The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison.

It’s as safe as ever to say that drunk driving isn’t so much of an unfortunate accident as it is a horrible habit.

I have a small amount of understanding and capacity of forgiveness for someone who has 3-4 beers and blows a a .09 or .10.  Have none of that for twice the limit stumbling drunks who get behind a wheel.  Those people should go to prison for at least a year and never again be allowed to drive a car.  But nobody cares so the penalties are a joke.

I'll wait to hear some more details about which of the two groups this one falls into.  But he should be at least suspended until we know more.  Kinda hard for Evans to make a stand here, though, which is a big part of the overall problem.

IMS: Mike Locksley addresses assistant Kevin Sumlin's status following arrest

https://247sports.co...rest-218787882/

Maryland football coach Mike Locksley addressed the status of assistant coach Kevin Sumlin on Tuesday at Locksley's weekly media availability session. Sumlin, who was arrested early Sunday morning in Florida for driving under the influence, is not with the team this week according to Locksley.

He's expected to face disciplinary action.

"Of course," Locksley said.

"It's disappointing, you know, as coaches we have to set the example and model behavior [for our players]. We take it very seriously, but at the same time he is part of our football family and we're going to support Kevin," he said, declining to say what what sort of discipline Sumlin might face, calling it a personnel decision.

I mean, that depends. If it's a one off thing? OK, maybe you didn't realize that 3-4 beers can give you a buzz. But if you're consistently getting behind the wheel after 3 or 4 beers, then you really need to figure out another means of transportation.

That said, when you refuse the breathalyzer you also waive your right for others to reserve judgement.

WR Tyrese Chambers has left the football program for "personal reasons". He'll remain in College Park to finish his degree.

Matt Zenitz (On3) reporting that Maryland has hired Merci Falaise as their general manager for player personnel. He’d been at N.C. State since 2017, and was part of the Wolfpack’s Top-35 recruiting class last year.

This fills the vacancy left in the recruiting department by Smoke Dixon.

I feel like Locksley can't coach / scheme a decent defense. Maybe it's Ravens defense bias, but watching the Terps consistently be unable to stop ANYONE DECENT on defense is exhausting.

Forget decent opponents....they couldn't even stop Illinois or Northwestern. Locksley is not a defensive coach and probably doesn't get involved in the schemes and calls much. Still, as the head coach the responsibility there does still fall on you (just ask Lincoln Riley).

And as far as yesterday, the problem was not solely on the defensive side of the ball, as their -49 yards rushing total should indicate.

I don't think their defensive issues have much to do with scheme, it's effort. Missed tackles, getting pushed around at the line, and mental errors are going to result in problems no matter what scheme you're playing. Brian Williams is a fine defensive coordinator schematically, but it's the general apathy they have as soon as things start to turn south that's the real issue.

So... Jimbo Fisher's buyout from Texas A&M apparently includes no offset considerations, so it seems he gets the whole $76 million from them even if he takes another job.  If for example he gets another gig at 6 years for $60 million (just making up numbers here)... that doesn't come "off" the invoice that the Aggies still owe him.  He gets it ALL!  Brilliant on his part.  :)

I think Maryland needs to roll the dice on a big name HC to ever become a credible football program in the conference.  Any hope that maybe he is willing to take a "not huge contract" and the challenge of getting UMD around the corner?  :)  I mean, the bar is so much lower in College Park than it was at A&M or FSU.  He doesn't need to win a title here, or even the conference.  Just get MD to the point where they don't lay eggs against the NW / Illinois types, and OCCASIONALLY beat a PSU, Michigan, or Ohio State when they're not "way down" for a year or two... and he's a legitimate hero here.  Dude has won a national title and actually beaten ranked teams.  That guaranteed $76 million coming his way no matter what is a nice safety net for a 58 year old with not much left to prove (in my mind).

I know it won't happen... but daydreaming is fine...

Maryland wouldn’t even be able to afford a “not huge” contract by Jimbo’s standards, especially with the money they’d also have to pay Locksley and his assistants to buy them out.

It’s also extremely unlikely that a big-name head coach would ever choose the Maryland job with the lack of NIL support for the program.

I'd think someone with a huge salary with an offset clause would be more likely to take a small salary from Maryland (or anywhere) than someone who would actually get to keep the Maryland salary and their full former salary.

Not a lot of people just turn down more money because they already have enough.

'21 and '22 were positive steps forward for the programs.

Recruiting made solid steps.
Winning seasons, bowl wins, extra practices.

'23 needed to be a another step forward, and unfortunately that didn't happen.
MD is going to get smacked by Michigan obviously.

Even if MD beats Rutgers, and wins a 3rd straight bowl... it will feel like this MD team left meat on the bone, with those Illinois and NW losses.

Still, that's what available to MD right now...  beat Rutgers, and win a 3rd straight bowl game.

Finish out the recruiting class.
Handle whatever departures there are.
Add substance of your own in the portal.

Maryland isn’t going to get better by hiring a retread like Fisher. Despite winning a title FSU was on a clear downward trend by the time he left, and one 10-win season in the COVID year was all he did at A&M (that it got him the contract it did shows you how desperate they are). If he can’t do better with the kind of recruiting classes he had at A&M, do we really think he’s getting good results at MD? (especially with far, far less NIL money to back him up)

Maryland gets better by finding someone like Lance Leipold, Jonathan Smith or Chris Klieman. And I don’t mean hiring those guys specifically…..none of them are leaving where they are for MD now. I just mean someone of their stature before they were hired for their current positions, a relative unknown. That’s obviously risky when there isn’t a comparable resume to draw from. But that’s where MD is.
