In a somewhat shocking move, Mac didn’t offer Samsonov a qualifying offer so he’ll be an unrestricted FA. Looking more and more like they’re going to go hard after Kuemper.

Not versed enough in the hockey off-season. What would it take to get someone like Kuemper? Is bringing Holtby back to a familiar place worth it after his struggles since leaving? Still only 32 y/o so there is gas in that tank.

Or should they go cheaper at goal and really shore up the defense, cause that seemed to be the issue often. Goalies can only stop so many shots, and short handed, OTs, the Caps defense was non-existent.

What’s the situation with the QO to Samsonov? Chance he can be brought back cheaper than the QO was? Or if you don’t give the QO did you pretty much burn that bridge?

I don't know enough either. I do know that evidently Holtby's injury is likely going to be career ending. Kuemper is an unrestricted FA, so they can get him if he agrees to sign here, no idea how expensive that'll be, but can't imagine buying higher than a FA Stanley Cup Champion goalie (see the Holtby FA deal after our Cup). I tend to think Samsonov is gone, I don't think they cared much for either of thoes guys. So they seem to be all-in on a premium FA goalie, or a trade maybe. We'll know more Wednesday (when FA starts). I like our defense right now BTW.

Yep, worst kept secret the past couple days.

We'll see how it plays out...i'm kinda indifferent on him. He's done ok where he's been but he's been kinda a journeyman, and it screams productivity was result of where he was more than who he was, so a little concerned, but hopeful. Plenty of journeyman guys have had solid runs later in their prime/career just from being around so long.

Good read on Japers earlier about the risks/rewards of the signing. He's basically been elite in Colorado with a good team - but somewhat mediocre with Minnesota before that. Hopefully he does well in this system.

Yep that's pretty much exactly the read I've had. It's just concerning to me to sink a 5 year contract into a 32 year old that has been that good in ONE place. I mean Grubauer was the best goalie on the market last year after playing in COL. This is like being a SP in OAK or LAD.

Alternatively it's not like there are many options out there. We got really spoiled for a while here, and this wave of prospects seems to have flopped...so yeah.

Wow. I hadn't been keeping up on the Caps off-season. Seems like a desperation signing. Who will be the backup goalie?

Signed the backup from STL to be backup goalie. I actually like his potential more than Darcy. He’s only 25 and in the little playing time he got was pretty stellar.

Strome they got from CHI for 1/3.5m is a steal and could be the best signing all summer. Everyone is shocked he took so little but speculation is it’s because of the uncertainty with Nick and he will probably sign an extension before going to market again as a RFA.

They e actually had a real solid off-season but are now $6m over the cap so that tells you what they think about Nicks odds of playing are.
